M1 Garand or AK?

I'm nearing the point of buying another. I've always wanted an M1 Garand...the only "real" rifle according to my Dad. I initially wanted to buy him one since he carried it in the army. But he said he'd rather that if I get one that I keep it and let him shoot it from time to time...he's in his 70s and doesn't think he'd get much use with it these days. CMP is accepting orders for some rifles that are due into them. These rifles are getting hard to find and prices are going way up. I'm considering their Service Grade for $595.

I also really want an AK before they possibly (probably) become unavailable. I already have an AR; so I don't want to get into that debate. I like both and they both have pros & cons. Anyway, I should be able to get a good AK for less than the M1. And I hear this clock ticking loud with AK availability as well.

So what do you guys/gals think? Which one would you recommend?

I'd go with the M1. Regardless of what does or does not happen with a gun ban, AK's will continue to be made probably well into the next century. An authentic Garand is a part of the American legacy and mystique.

I'd go with the M1 garand... better yet, go with the M1A! Although the AK is touted as being the super indestructable, will-go-bang-everytime SHTF "go-to" weapon, I just couldn't bring myself to own a commie-gun. Guess I just bleed red, white and blue.

AK is the way to go. M1 is just way too heavy unless you get the scout version with plastic furniture. Both are great rifle but I take AK over M1 any day of the week.

Also, instead of following the path of past history, you can make one of your own. Own an AK as a symbol of anti-establishment.

DO NOT LISTEN TO HIM!!

Unless you are a sissy, the whole what, 10lb rifle (wood stock) isnt even really "heavy" unless you went shooting it for hours and hours and stood up the whole time...

AK's are good all around guns to have but if you have the $$ for a Garand, DEF. go that way, manufactured WAY better than the AK & not to mention, its a freaking M1 MAN!!

I would go with an M1 Garand. As some of the others have said, there is the factor of history and it a real rifle, meaning it has a wood stock. I got my M1 through CMP and even though it is a rack grade it still shoots pretty darn good. I also have a AR15 and an AK47 parts kit with a receiver that I will build someday, but the M1 is my first choice.
