4" XD-9 vs G17 for IDPA

I'm about to retire my 1911 from IDPA duty and was thinking of an XD chambered in 9mm. I have shot at least 100 rounds through a test gun and like the ergonomics, with the exception of a FTE about every 25 rounds. This is with WWB hardball. The XD certainly it fits my hand a little better than the Block, and being a similar sight angle, it points more like a 1911, but I'm afraid of a gun that won't run and am giving serious consideration to the G17.

I see that there's another thread regarding FTE's with the XD in 9 and am trying get a better idea of the reliability I can expect. Certainly the XD is a better VALUE ($460 for the XD with mag pouch and holster) vs $489 for the Glock and I would rather buy the XD... but its making it hard to do. The Glock just works.

Anyone have any insight?

Thanks.
Seth

I own three XDs, and I have owned five total. I've never had any FT-anythings except right after having a match barrel fitted (tight) in my XD-9 Tactical.

I just finished a four stage IDPA match about two hours ago without any issue. I think the gun you shot was the exception rather than the rule.

I have over 11,000 rounds through my XD9 with maybe 5 failures to eject. Those were early on when the gun was new and I was still learning to shoot. I attribute it to a loose grip. Today, I shoot my XD9 in IDPA and love it. It put me in the ESP division though.

Is there any difference between the reliability of the 4" vs. the 5"? The 5" seems to be MUCH harder to come by, but is obviously more desireable for sight radius alone.

I think I've had 1 FTE with my 4" XD9 and that was due to a loose grip when I was learning how to shoot with it. I have probably 2000+ rounds through it.

What is it about the design of the Glock that make it superior to other pistols?

I've seen a few XD's that had machining flaws or extrators that have caused FTE's, other than that they just work. The XD's is based on designs that are VERY time tested and proven to be very reliable.

I've seen a lot of Glock malfuntions over the years, and to say they are more reliable than other similiar model pistols is a very uniformed statement IMO. If you can look at the design and tell me something specific that would make them more reliable, I'm all ears.

The main difference between the XD and Glock in IDPA are that the XD competes in ESP and the Glock competes in SSP. I recently shot the classifier with both (rotating guns per string) and the scores were within a couple seconds of each other.

OK I'm kind of confused. Are you saying that the XD don't "just work"? I'd go with the XD myself. I've owned and shot both, but at the end of the day I sold my glock and got the XD. I've never had any problems with any aspect of the XD except that it had a long break-in period before the trigger was loose enough for my liking. I never did like the glock's trigger. If I had wanted a double action revolver, I'dve bought one. The grip angle of both were decent, but the XD fits my hands 100% better dimension wise.

Try to find an XD 40, I've never had a jam with mine in over 200+ rounds now. I limp wristed one and caused one not to fully chamber but that was it.
