I shot the M&P today...

Follow today's match, a gentleman allowed me to shoot two mags of 40SW through his M&P. At first, I was like, "Hey, this feels nice in the hands." Then I pulled the trigger and yelped, "Holy Crap! That is one long and heavy trigger."

The gun shot and ran fine. The trigger was too long and heavy for me, but I know that Burwell's trigger job can fix that. I also didn't care for the thin, rounded trigger, as it seems that it would be much easier to jerk the trigger. I guess practice will help there.

Finally, when S&W comes out with the M&P in 9x19 in the long slide, I will get one. I like the gun, but I feel that it does not come close to the overall feel and performance of the XD. Perhaps my mind will change when I am an M&P owner. Doubtful.

Wink

I was in a local firearm store this past week and was looking in a display case at some XDs. This salesman pulled a new S&W M&P .45acp out. He showed me neat way the handgrip can be changed then quickly put it back safe under glass.

He never even asked if I cared to hold it. I had read about it in this Months G&A and the writer said the trigger needed getting used to. What ever that means.

Think I will just stick with my XD-45 service.

Same deal on my end. M&P has a great feel, very ergonomic. Then I wrapped my index around the trigger. BLEEEHHHHH and Yuk, put the thing down and bought another XD.

Don't give up on this gun OS. Providing you get one that is reliable - there has been a problem with the mag catch (accelerated wear and mags dropping while shooting) and a few other minor glitches associated with the M&P.

I had 2 M&P's, now have 1 (I kept my .40c, both required trips back to S&W for repairs but now my 40c is doing very well. This is one gun where the trigger really DOES smooth out in time. Mine started out at about 6#. It is now after about 800 rounds down to 5#. That is very impressive. Silky smooth with no grit and a clean break.

Like the XD, the M&P has excellent ergonomics but because of early and unfortunately still exisitng problems with the mag catch, it remains to be seen whether the gun will be a true contender and have an extended shelf life. At this point in time, I believe you have a far better chance of getting a reliable XD right out of the box vs. the M&P (especially the compact models). As for trigger mods, for carry, I would leave the M&P trigger alone! While Dan Burwell does a nice job lightening things up, the result is more pre-travel, something to consider. Some shooters may not like that.

Should I buy a M&P it will be a Game Gun for IDPA SSP. I will get the most work done that I can, that will be legal and reliable. For now, the M&P trigger would cause too much unnecessary muzzle movement because of the weight. I would be better off shooting a Glock than a M&P with a stock trigger.

I do hope that the M&P sticks around. I have some doubts, but it will come down to marketing and the incentives S&W offers to LEOs in order for them to adopt the gun for duty.

Marketing has a lot to do with it but if the perception among the general shooting public, is that this is a problem gun, all the marketing in the world is not going to help. As yet, the bugs have yet to be worked out of the M&P particularly the compacts. Time will tell. I attended a LE trade show this week and spoke to the S&W folks. They are hoping beyond hope that they can land a big LE contract. That could be the turning point but in order to do so, the M&P really has to shine in the trials. Frankly, I don't think there was sufficient testing of the M&P (emphasis on the compacts) before they hit the street and it may be a case where S&W just has too many models, too many designs, and cannot devote sufficient time to putting the new intros through the paces. With the M&P the hope was to go toe to toe with the Glock and the XD (same price point). I don't think they are quite there yet. Having said that, S&W's customer service is excellent and they really do try and make things right.
