Question Armscor Rock Island 1911 (.45) for $360??

I'm not at all familiar with 1911 handguns, so I wanted to tap into everyone's combined knowledge here. This would be my first 1911 handgun purchase. I've never fired one, either. Here are a few questions:

I'm sure there are many 1911's out there that are fancier and higher quality than these, but since I'm a 1911 newbie, would this make a good "starter" 1911?

How is the pistol for fit/finish? Is it a nice tight fit or is it sloppy and loose? I'm particularly concerned due to the price, compared to many others I've seen approaching (or exceeding) the $1000 mark.

For those who have them, how do they shoot? Good groups? Any failures (chambering, extracting, feeding, etc)?

Is $360 a good price?

Here's a partial description: "ARMSCOR ROCK ISLAND .45 PISTOLS - ROCK ISLAND .45 1911-A1 PISTOLS. THEY HAVE A BEAUTIFUL DARK PARKERIZED FINISH, AND REALLY NICE HARDWOOD GRIPS. BRAND NEW PRODUCTION, EACH PISTOL COMES WITH 1 8 RD. MAG , OWNERS MANUAL, AND FACTORY FIRED TEST CASINGS. SHIPS IN A REALLY STURDY HARDSHELL CASE. $359.95"

So, what are your thoughts, or comments?

Help me out, please. I seek wisdom!!

I have a compact model and I love it. I even had Scott over at Springer Precision pimp it out for me with the Beavertail Grip Safety, hammer, trigger and safety. I think $360 is a good price since they seem top be very popular these days. I think I paid $329 for mine but that was at a gun show.

RIA was my entry into the 1911 world and I'll prolly pick up more of their products. $360 is a very good deal, grab it. I paid $400 for my GI w/ extra mag about 4 months ago.
A few FTRTB in the 1st 100 rounds using WWB, runs like a champ now.
check out the RIA section here http://forum.m1911.org/

Rock Island = great "basic" 1911. When I have the cash to finally jump in it's the model I'll probably get.

Price is about normal for my area. You might want to replace the grips.
They work fine but a re bit plane looking. Also watch the recoil spring. They seem to be on the weak side on RIAs. But replace the spring with a Wolff #18 or #20 and head to the range for some target time .

I have an RIA 1911 Commander and love it. The only thing I don't like is the combat sights. After this deployment I will be upgradeing those. I had a few extractor issues but that was because it was used. !0 mins at a smith cleared that up. I have about 700 rounds through it since it was cleaned up with no problems at all. For the price you cant go wrong. I like it so much I am thinking about getting one in 38 super.

I am VERY pleased with my RIA 1911. Very accurate with no problems whatsoever.

Very good pistols for the price. Obviously you can't compare them with high end STIs or Wilsons or whatever, but they're a great starter 1911.

And if you want to do a little work to it down the road, it makes a lot more sense to start with a no-frills $350 1911 than it does to start with a $500 no-frills 1911.
