Now I need a scope

OK, I've decided I want a Savage 116. Now I need to pick a scope for it.

This will be going on a 7 mag, so I'm thinking about the Leopold VX-I in 4-12. This scope is less than some other Leopold offerings VX-II and VX-III, as well as less than the Burris options in this magnification range.

Anyone have experience with the VX-I?

What other scopes should I consider? I really don't want to spend much more than 300 - 350.

I've got Burris optics on two of my rifles, I think I spent about $120 each on them. One is on my Ruger 10/22 (4-12 variable) and the other is on my Steyr Scout in .308win (1.5-9 variable, going to be replaced with a 4-12). Both have held up great, I've had them about 2 years now.

I realize the scopes I have are probably 1/2 of what you want to spend, but for what I use them for (varmit/deer/plinking) they seem to do real good, plus, $300 would equate to two more 10/22's, which would be real tough for me to justify. But, hey, if you got the money, spend it (I did the same thing with buying my Scout instead of a Rem 700 or something similar for 1/3rd the price)

I ordered mine from www.opticsplanet.com in two separate orders. I found good prices and shipping. They might be worth checking out.

Have fun with your new Savage, I've only heard good things about that brand.

Thanks. I haven't done a lot of looking, but I had not considered the Burris, simply because of what I saw at Cabelas on pricing. They had some 2-7 power Burris scopes listed comparable to the Leupold 4-14, but their 4.5-14 Burris scopes were pushing 500.

Anyway, thanks for the link.

I'd look at the Pentax at www.cameralandny.com or the Swifts at www.eabco.com. I've never been a fan of the VX-I personally. Or the Brownings on closeout at Natchez.

I'm not interested in going cheap. My dad has always been a fan of $59 Tasco scopes. Now, for all I know, tasco may make some good quality optics, but their $59 options ain't it.

I grew up shooting a Redfield Widefield on my 243. That was a good scope, and still is, I think. Unfortunately, it got cloudy up on the high magnification end, and, since Redfield is no more....

Still, I wouldn't trade that scope for a cheap one.

Anyway, I don't plan to go cheap. I want a good scope that I will be happy with and will last forever. Of course, I don't have $800 to spend on a scope, either.

On that note, What do y'all think of the Burris Fullfield II. Cabelas in Ft Worth has one with the Ballistic Plex reticle that I could afford.

Good scope, I heard Pentax makes the glass. I can't believe you can't it anywhere besides Cabela's for a lot less.
