Kid suspended for drawing a pix of a gun.

DATED: 12:34 pm EDT August 22, 2007

Student Suspended For Drawing Gun Picture
QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. -- A 13-year-old student who drew a picture of a gun on his homework at Payne Junior High School in Queen Creek was suspended from school, reported KPHO-TV in Phoenix.

Survey: Is Boy's Suspension Fair?
(Survey showed 91% of the responders said suspension was wrong! MW)

The boy was initially suspended for at least five days, but his father spoke to the principal, who reduced it to three.

The Mosteller family moved to Chandler from Colorado Springs only four weeks ago, but it's not the kind of greeting Paula Mosteller, the boy's mother, said she was expecting.

"My son is a very good boy," Mosteller said.

"He doesn't get into trouble. There was nothing on the paper that would signify that it was a threat of any form," she said.

The principal at Payne Junior High School kept the actual drawing.

Said the boy's mother, "He was just basically doodling and not thinking a lot about it."

The Chandler Unified School District declined to give more details about the incident, saying, "Federal privacy law forbids the school or district from discussing student discipline."

"We're not advocates for guns," Mosteller said. "We don't have guns in our home. We don't promote the use of guns. My son was just basically doodling on a piece of paper."

There's nothing in a portion of the student handbook that addresses conduct to indicate the drawing of a weapon poses threat, the television station reported.

There is, however, a rule that says students should not engage in "threatening an educational institution by interference with or disruption of the school." (end story)

That is right up there with that kid in a Canadian school lunchroom suspended for holding a "chicken finger" like the barrel of a gun...UNBELIEVABLE!

Crazy. The parents aren't even pro-gun, and even THEY see how ludacris the school is.

Folks, either you join the NRA and have them represent your 2nd Amendment rights, or these jacka$$s will take them away. There is NO middle-ground in the argument.

Your're kidding right? Do you know how many kids are threatened let alone killed by pictures of drawn guns every year! Where will it end? Pretty soon that same kid will be drawing pictures of AK's and M4's. Many more kids can be frightened by seeing a picture of an AK than just a revolver. I'm all for a DPG license in art class - drawing a picture of a gun. Even then, they should only be aloowed to draw one gun a month.
What's next, the kid will want to bring toy army men to school? Kids lucky he wasn't expelled. Had that happened in NY, ATF would probably being raiding the parents home looking for more pictures.

The problem was he didn't draw a serial number on it, so he couldn't register the drawing. Scofflaw should be tossed in the klink!

wow, I'm glad that didn't exist when I was in school. I probably would've been expelled.

completely rediculous. He should appeal the decision because I'm 99% sure that they have no legal grounds to suspend him for drawing a gun.

What's next expulsion for pointing your finger at someone like a gun?

What if he wants to be a weapons engineer when he grows up? How is the school helping out his career?

so if this isn't in the handbook and the student got suspended, but the disruption of school is in the handbook, should we suspend the principal for disrupting the school with news media, and disrupting the child's education because of there personal opinion?
