Savage rifles
I've been looking into a new rifle and was wondering what folks think of the Savage rifles? They have a list price several hundred less than the A-bolts or Remingtons I've looked at.
How do Savage rifles compare to the other options? Are they accurate or consistent and how's the reliability? Any issues with them I should know about. To narrow it down, this would be a hunting rifle in a 7 mag or maybe one of the WSM rounds. |

They are excellent rifles. I liked my first one so much, I bought a second. One of the cool things about the savages is if you want a couple different calibers for different purposes, as long as the bolt face is the same on the diff. calibers, it's just a barrel change and in 20 minutes you can be shooting a diff caliber. Some people don't like the feel of the accutrigger, but it really doesn't bother me. It's no worse the the trigger safety on the glocks and xds.
ETA: a couple people have had issues w/ the rifle not grouping well out of the box. Once they recrown the bbl, all but one person had their problems disappear. The factory crown is passable, but if you have a smith recrown it for you before you even take it to the range (about 30-50 bux) you'll be a happy camper. Also, shilen is now making direct replacement bbls now that don't need the chamber cut deeper after install.

I like my savage 30.06. I just wish I had waited to buy it so I could get the accutrigger too.

Savage makes a very reliable rifle. Best bang for the buck, pun intended.
I personally prefer the models w/the accutrigger, some do, dome don't. If you're looking at Savage, take a glance at the Stevens model as well. It's basic, no frills, but every bit as good a shooter as Savages were 5 years ago. And it should be because it's built using the same equipment Savage used for years before they upgraded their plant and decided to use their old equipment to manufacture the Stevens line. Savage may not get the oooh's and ahhhh's other rifles get, but with the money you save you can afford a better scope. At the end of the day it will put the meat on the table, and still be doing it for your kids if with basic maintenance. |

Have the FP10 in 308. Agree with everyone's statements. Great rifle.

I picked up a used 12 VLP .223 for use in F Class the other day. It shot a .589" 5 shot group @ 100, with Black Hills 77g. It shot the same size in a 4 out of 5 shot group @ 200. Some good glass, it'll be there. I also have Savages in 6.5X55 (converted a 30-06), 223 Ackley (converted a 223), 338-06 (converted from a 7 mag), 270 (didn't convert, just put on a stainless, fluted barrel with a brake), and 300 Winmag. Still have a 110 donor action, a 22-250 Ackley barrel, and a Stevens 2506 in search of a project. You can't beat a Savage for out of the box accuracy, but you can spend a ton of money on that Remchester trying to get the same. In other words......more accurate, more consistent, and just as reliable as the over-priced alternatives.
And the only difference in a Savage and a Stevens is the Accutrigger. They don't use old equipment to make the Stevens. And what are you going to hunt in Texas that needs a magnum? If you get a WSM, you may have trouble finding ammo some day.
