Beretta finish, scratch removal
I have a 2" long surface scratch along the exposed part of the barrel on my Beretta M9. Will a gun bluing pen really correct this without discoloring the area around it? I'm not sure how these things work...
I think the barrel has a traditional blued finish...but a Beretta person might have more to say about the standard, black, Beretta M9/92 finish and how I might fix the scratch...?

I have the 40 caliber version of your pistol - the 96F. I too thought about refinishing it, because I like it and it is a very good shooter.
Well, one call to Beretta USA in MD and guess what - there are actually THREE different types of finishes on the 92/96/M9 series gun! The slide has a sort of high tech paint job called "Bruniton" that does scratch easily (mine has plenty of scratches). The frame is alloy and is anodized (which is an electrical process for aluminum alloys...not ferrous metals). The barrel is parkerized...and a fairly thin parkerization, if you ask me. Why Beretta uses three different finishes...they could not explain. If you ahve ever seen an Italian car under the hood...this makes perfect sense. LOL Beretta USA will refinish your 92/96/M9 series gun, but it will run you around 450 bucks. I am NOT spending 450 bucks to refinish a pistol I paid 350 dollars for...sorry! Its not THAT bad. The guys at Beretta USA are very nice and I am sure they do a great job. Robar has an NP3 finish that runs about 350 bucks and looks great on these pistols. Still...thats kinda high for me. Toss in shipping both ways and I'd be well over 400 bucks for this finish altogether. Tripp Research in Alpine, TX can hard chrome the slide and barrel and put some matching proprietary finish on the alloy frame. It looks good but again...you're looking at at least 300 bucks for this finish. I don't think they can do a matte black like the M9. Every Beretta I see from Tripp is matte silver. Good looking...but you'll pay for it. I have been toying with having my 96 Dura-Coated. This can be done for about 140 dollars. Dura Coat can be applied to all three other finishes on the Beretta. It seems fairly durable, but not totally indestructive. Good thing is that you can re-coat it later on if you want. Dura Coat comes in al lsorts of colors if you want to change it up and they have a nice flat black that is a dead ringer for Beretta's Bruniton slide finishes. These are pretty much the affordable and most available options...and I have looked around! I don't think a bluing pen would cover it up properly...but you could try it. That M9 is a good shooter isn't it? I borrowed an M9 from my neighbor and really liked it. The 92/96/M9 series guns are the best pistols Beretta made..no doubt. - brickboy240
