The general consensus is that the Sigma line is too chronically problematic to be worth owning. This being said, there are the occasional owner testimonials stating that they've had great luck with theirs and there haven't been any problems. You might get a good one, but given their history, most folks don't like the odds and pass. If you like Smith products, save up a bit more and get an M&P.

I know several guys that bought them back when they first came out, who are still carrying them. All I have ever fired (maybe half a dozen?) have worked perfectly- and shot just fine. The grip and grip angle are exceptional for point shooting, and in my first workout with these guns I found myself regularly hitting empty Copenhagen cans stood on edge, at 7 yards- from the hip. Not many guns point this well for me in 'yank & blast' drills.
Early Sigmas had an issue with the trigger return spring, or so I am told. I've personally never seen one break or malfunction. This and a few other issues were resolved when the 'Enhanced' line was adopted. But what has really killed the Sigma is that it requires attention to basics and regular practice, in order to shoot it well. Many shooters simply aren't willing to make the effort. The Sigma's is in most respects just like a DAO revolver. I shot DA revolvers for years, so I get along with it just fine. It is in my opinion fully the equal of the XD, and if someone issued me a Sigma I sure wouldn't cry. I would practice with it, and prove that particular gun just like any other.

I have only fired newer Sigmas in the last 2 years range. They seem to be great pistols if you can find the right ammo for them. I have read in several places they are finicky about ammo.
Besides why spend budget money on a pistol that has $40 magazines??? XD mags only cost $20.

My father has had one as his carry gun since they came out.
I can attest to the fact that one can survive a spill from a truck roof at 45 mph while in a softcase with no noticeable ill-effects. Having fired my father's a number of times, I find it very inconsistent.

I've got one, I love it. Never had any sort of failure in close to 2k rounds. I found out yesterday that I shoot better with it rapid fire panic-style than with my XD.
My self test is to fire 30 rds. at a target quickly... no more than .5-1 second between shots. 2 reloads. With the Sigma, I put 26 out of 30 along what I would call the sternum of the target. With the XD I had more rounds closer to center, but a lot larger spread from left to right. Now, the obvious results of the test are that I stink at shooting and that my practice habits aren't very good. However, I feel it is indicative of a definate use for the Sigma and given its reliability history, I have no problem carrying it for self defense. joe
