Mossberg 100ATR
I am looking to get a new rifle pretty soon.
Nothing flashy nothing overly expensive. I like the plain jane appeal of the Mossberg ATR and Remington 700sps. I am looking for one in .308 all synthetic stock/black. Any thoughts on these two rifles... Any good? Average price... best place to get one. Going to be used for occasional hunting and target shooting.

Check out Savage, too.... Fantastic barrels and triggers out of the box.

If you don't want to spend that much, get a Stevens. All the Savage aftermarket parts fit it, so you can upgrade it as you can afford it. A Savage or Stevens will outshoot the two you're looking at with no problem. Especially the Mossberg.

Stevens huh?
What kind of range would a rifle such as this afford? 500 yards? 1000 yards? in between?

Depends on the caliber. But I had no trouble shooting some 223 40 g Hornaday V-maxs to fireform yesterday at 500 yards, in my 223 Ackley. It's a Stevens I rebarreled, then put a trigger in. Didn't win, but I was happy for my first time. Best group was about 4".

How much are you planning to spend??
I got my Savage from Wallyworld for $349....that's with the Accutrigger & a Simmons 3-9x40 scope. The scope is only average...it went on a 10/22 build I was doing, but the trigger is amazing!! Absolutely no reason to change it out. It adjusts as low as 2lbs (simple instructions & little tool included) and mine has no movement at that weight...just pressure & Bang! Putting a good trigger in the Stevens will probably take it into the Savage price range. One drawback, the tupperware plastic stocks are kinda wimpy. But, for field use they are fine & if you're gonna shoot competitively then you'll be replacing the stock on whatever you buy anyway. Oh yeah, by getting the Savage (or Stevens) you can easily rebarrel to several other calibers for pretty low cost. I have a 30-06 and can rebarrel to about 9 different calibers from 25-06 to 35Whelen. |

Savage is the best value for price under $800 or so.. anything over $800 and the options open way up and Savage loses ground quickly. Yet, I don't think you'll go wrong with the sub $800 savages, just don't expect to compete against Joe Rich Guy with his HATECA (or other) Custom shop tweaked Remington 700
Anyway you look at this, most of the mid range .308's are fairly close to each other in performance. What will matter more than which of them you choose is which optic are you going to put on there. Skimp on the optic and skimp on longer range accuracy. I mean ranges beyond 400m or so. I can go on for days about this..
