ruger sp101 versus XD9 sub
which do you prefer for EDC? which is your favorite to shoot? are you more confident with one versus the other?

Comparing the SP01 and the XD9SC is like comparing an apple to an orange. You are comparing a 5-shot revolver to a 10-round autoloader.
I much prefer shooting autos over revolvers, but that is me. I would be confident in carrying both. OS

I think that a .357 Magnum SP-101 is much stronger firepower than a 9mm until you get to round 6. Then you have to empty the cartridges and pop a speedloader in with another 5'er. And you are still short of the XD-9's capacity.
OTOH... you get a big pop out of those 158 grain magnum loads. But your hand will know it!! I guarantee it. I like my SP-101 but I prefer to ratchet it down to .38 Special +P loads. That reduces the firepower a good bit. The SP-101 is as simple a weapon as you can find... mount, aim, pull the trigger. If you have good shot placement, it is a great choice. But if you need to have margin for error the 9mm is a much better choice. You get more shots, faster, and with a lot less recoil. Your choice. They are very different guns but they both do the same thing... namely, send pieces of metal at high speed across long distances until their energy expires or they impact something that stops them.

My XD is a service model but I get better groups with my SP101. I can't say why and the difference is not dramatic. I'm comfy carrying either one.
If you are trying to decide which one is best for EDC, only you can figure out that. |

The XD9 subcompact by far. I had an SP-101 and it was the biggest piece of junk that I have ever owned. I could only carry .38's in it because .357's would swell in the cylinder and I needed a hammer to get them out (made for some pretty slow reloads). The trigger was awful. It had a hitch in it that would sometimes stick the trigger to the rear. I now have an XD 9 subcompact and love it. It is very accurate and completely reliable.

My only problem with my Ruger is the recoil of the magnums and the 5-shot capacity. Otherwise it is a great close-in gun. The bobbed hammer doesn't snag on anything. It is extremely reliable... never had a firing problem. It is easy to clean. I like it a lot.

Either one. I've have/had both and shoot equally well with them. Consideration for me for carry was usually what I wore or where I was going. If carrying in the fanny pack going running/biking, I tend towards the SP101 bobbed hammer. No snag, quick draw.

got both and shoot both.if you can't handle recoil and flames
I found the sp101 easier for carry but thats just me. if you need more than 5 rd's of 357 mag a 12 ga might be a better choice. hey I had a dodge van it was a POS pete ![]()
