Need some advice for next purchase
About 2 months ago I purchased my first XD (9mm bitone service), never owned a handgun before, and now i'm hooked. Ive put close to 2500 rounds through and now I am looking to pick up another piece. This will be my last summer working before I start my 2nd year of med school and then rotations 3rd and 4th year, so basically this summer is the last summer I will be earning any disposable income in a long long long long long time.
I am trying to decide between: 1.) A .22 plinker. Probably a Ruger MKII or III. Inexpensive, more money saved for trips to the range. Ammo is cheap so i can shoot all day and work on those fundamentals. 2.) Splurge a bit and pick up a 1911. Not an overly expensive one around ~$800 range (STI spartan or springfield loaded). Ammo is pricey, but hey its a 1911 and its really tempting. 3.) Don't purchase anything and spend the money on more 9mm ammo and range time for the XD. So, I'm looking to you guys for some suggestions and other pro's and con's of each choice that I have overlooked. Any and all input is welcome, including save the money to pay back your student loans (but what fun is that?) |

i'd buy the plinker....never the less be sure to do some research on your top three picks and go fondle them before purchase.
for the money i like the neos 6" stainless. or a used ruger mark series. there's a million opinions on whats offered in this price range. ultimately the decision is yours.....happy hunting.

yeah, I have been obsessing over this for the past week, trolling various forums and shooting a few of the .22s. Haven't been able to try out any 1911's yet so my choices are based primarily from what i've read from other users.
Hopefully I can find some time to go out and shoot a few. in the next few weeks. |

To be honest, I could make a case for any one of your options. I own lots of pistols in various calibers and I reload for all of them but there is a lot to be said for a good old .22 pistol. It will allow you to work on the basics of trigger control and sight alignment at a much reduced cost. As a reloader, I enjoy a break from having to chase brass.
You could also take the difference between the .22 and the 1911 and use it to continue to practice with your XD. Good luck. |

Or you can go with a less expensive but not less quality 1911 like the Rock Island Armory. Very well built guns and just as customizable as any other 1911. I had mine done by none other than Forum Sponsor: Springer Precision. Not only does he do a great job on XD's but on 1911's as well.
