Smart guns on Discovery channel

Just catching the end of a show on the Discovery channel that highlights the efforts of Colt to produce a gun that can only be fired with the person wearing the coded watch.

IMO... what if your batteries or electronics fail?

I've seen that same show on History channel a number of times. Colt's said they won't deploy the weapon until they've solved all foreseeable problems, including the battery dying in the midst of a fight.

One thing they may consider is using the kinetic motion watch design to also power the transmitter. We'll see.

Yup, I thought the idea was kind of lame.

When he demonstrated how it worked, he was wearing the watch on his right hand. With his left hand he took the gun, pointed it at himself, and tried to pull the trigger--thus demonstrating the gun will only fire in close proximity to the watch.

Problem? I think so... There are times when you'll have to fire weak hand un-supported! What if your dominant hand gets injured? Wear two watches? What if you need a real watch that actually tells time?

It wouldn't work for me either. I hate wearing watches. A few summers ago I broke my hand because of a watch.
Mountain biking accident and the watch was driven into to top of my hand as it got pinned between my hand and arm and the wrist twisted back. Had I not been wearing a watch, at worst I would've had a sprained joint.

Thanks, but no thanks.

I can see some people getting hurt over a failure. I think Sig Arms toyed with a concept years ago.

The solution is going to end up being Biometric in one fashion or another. Not accessory's and secondary control devices. Most of the stuff that makes it to TV is at least 6 months to a year old. Moore's law trumps the value of most of those shows.

Considering the advancements in stabilizing electronics to handle the shock of a weapons fire and recoil, battery size and power evolutions.. it's coming and it will either be a print reader on the trigger face or front strap. If you think about it the reader only needs to be powered long enough to initialize an unlock and lock up, so the power requirements drop significantly.

It's gonna be cool one of these days!

Cool idea, but never gonna be practical for other than civilian use. The military probably already has industrial versions of EMP/HERF/Shock Pulse Generators. Therefore it is never gonna be a military thing, but might become a civilian novelty item that law enforcement can control

An electronic lock to satisfy the brady bunch. That is my view.
