New Scope Advice for Army-issue M4 Rifle

Any input would be appreciated. My brother-in-law is in the Army, undergoing his last round of training before deploying to the sandbox this August. He's asked me for help in finding a Rifle Scope for his standard-issue M4 rifle. He's with some combat engineering types for construction , IED-clearing, etc (i.e. non-infantry mission):

1. What type of rail mount does the M-4 rifle come with?
2. Night Vision is NOT needed
3. Budget is $250 to $450
4. Optical scope is preferred, illuminated is optional
5. Is there anything like the Trijicon ACOG series scopes for under $500?
6. If you know of specific scopes preferred by active duty US Army personnel, I'd sure appreciate it.

Thanks!

Most likely he'll be issued an optic. If not either an AimPoint ML series or EOTech 552 would be the route I would go. Neither are magnified, but there most likely won't be a need for that. Again, he should speak with his Chain of Command about what they expect to be issued. After he gets there, gets his full issue, if there isn't an optic, then look at getting something.

1. 1913 Standard Rail
2. NV is always needed with mil optics!
3. Budget puts you in the AP/EOT range
4. Do you mean something with magnification?
5. ACOG's are going to exceed your budget
6. AP and EOT's are common issue

You might want to do some reading (I wouldn't post this question) at lightfighter.net

If he needs magnified, I would go with the Trijicon Acog. Nothing beats it, IMO.

if he wants magnified, you could check some luepold shotgun scopes. they carry a lifetime warranty, are under 500.00 and will go down to 2x.
they are not really a combat optic but its an option. Otherwise i would say Eotech or Aimpoint for that price. Both make magnifiers now too.

I will have to concede to ichy_trigger, I have not used the EoTech Magnifier, so that might very well be up there also. I love the Eotech, and if their magnifier works have as well, that would awesome.

Adding the AP or EOT mag will take you into the range of a ACOG. Again I would say just wait and see what he gets issued. You might find that you could better help by sending comfort items and poggy bait.
