Opinions on the Taurus PT99AF

A local guy wants to sell a few guns to put some cash together for whatever reason and he has one for sale for

Taurus PT 99AF 9mm with adjustable sights, matte black finish and 4 15 round magazines for just under $300. I don't know how many rounds have been fired through it. It also has a loaded chamber indicator and it's one of the models without a de-cocker, I guess that makes it an older model.

What do you guys think? I have no experience with any Taurus firearms or the Beretta that this particular model resembles.

My wife has shot a Glock 17 and my XD45 compact and had no trouble shooting it, and I'm also wondering if this would be a decent gun for her to shoot at the range.

EDIT (more information): He believes he bought it in 1994 or 1995, he's the second owner. It was in NIB condition when he got it. He thinks he's fired 650-750 rounds through it since and he says it funtions 100% although the finish has some light wear.

I have no first hand experience, however everything I have heard from friends that own them is good.

From what I understand it's a hell of a gun for the meager price they ask for it.

I have heard good and bad on the Beretta clones, I have shot one once, and it was ok. I thought that they had the same design, and parts and that if something with wrong you could put a Beretta part in it. Maybe I am wrong. But for the price, if it's in good condition. And you like the way it feels, I woudl say get it. Check Gun Broker on the average going price though....

I only found one PT99 between GunBroker and GunsAmerica and someone wanted over $400 for it, but it had a nickel finish.

Paid 320 for mine. I like it, something cheaper to shoot than the .45.

Will not take Berretta mags though, not without some modding. Won't take the grips either, though I do like the frame mount safety on the Taurus more than the slide mount Berretta.

That's what I was thinking, something cheaper to shoot, something comfortable for my wife to shoot, and something she can use at home when I'm not around.

My wife and I shot one when a friend of ours brought it on a range trip. I've never shot an M9/Ninety-Two, so I have nothing to compare it to, but standing on its own merits it seemed like a nice piece. Between the three of us it went through about two hundred rounds with zero malfunctions and due to its weight was very comfortable to shoot. My wife in particular liked it because it's one of the few semi-auto's we've run across where she and her meager hand strength could manipulate the slide without any difficulties. For the price, I say go for it.

Yeah....for that amount of money I'd snap it up and play with it for a while, and if you (and the Boss) decide it's really not something you're interested in keeping, you could probably resell it for what you paid, or at least get pretty close.
