Maybe this issue needs a sticky. I see it at least once a month.

Well, this argument goes round and round forever. I only keep 1 mag loaded for each gun - but I underload by 1. There is an eternal argument about the springs wearing out by straight compression, or from the expending/contracting of use.
I've seen mags over the years that have had the springs worn out. By underloading them by 1, I've never had a problem. So, that's my preference. In the 1990s, the majority of the people online did this that I saw. I still do it. |

And a half empty mag is only half as useful as an full mag.
I had a S&W M59 that has been kept with the mags loaded for over 20 years. Yes I would shoot it but as soon as I cleaned it, I reload it and keep it loaded in the house. No problem with the original factory mags. I gave to Htown and the mags are still going.

Yeah, like they said: Leaving a magazine full won't hurt it enough to be perceptible inside about fifteen years. And if you neglect your gun that long, you've got more problems than a weak magazine spring.
Also, if you're really that worried about it, just go get a .357Magnum revolver and leave that loaded. Promise, it won't hurt any springs.

I currently have my S&W Model 19 Combat Magnum loaded and ready for action. I was just curious about any problems with magazines. I really didn't think there was anything to it, just wanted to hear what everyone else thought about it. I have already loaded the mags with Federal 230 grain hydrashocks.

I have been storing mine unloaded for a long time because I have always been told that leaving them loaded will swell the mag and make it hard to get in and out of the receiver. The XD came with nice Stainless Steel mags. I have not worried about that due to the construction of the mags. Before my Xd I used to just keel my 12ga loaded with 7 rounds to guard the castle with.
