Hows this Combo?
I have been looking for a good gun to carry while walking around in the desert. My ar is a bit loud and could be devistating at longer distances than I need. I came across the CZ 527 American in .221 fireball. Would love to pick it up, and then mount a mueller optics 2-7x32 scope with it. The gun will be carried around in the dessert and used on jack rabbits and coyotes out to 150 - 200 yards. How is the Gun/Caliber? I know very little about either. Anyone shot one? The scope should be great for what I want, I would think.
Thanks for the replys. DaFunk |

The ballistics for the .221 Fireball isn’t too bad but there isn’t much out there in the way of ammo choices in that caliber and it might be hard to find in some places.

You would be better off with a Savage 93r17. Very accurate and the round was made for varmints. I like the Mueller scope, but would recommend at least a 40mm variable.

I have a Bushnell 6-18x50 on my .17 hmr Savage. Sounds like over kill, but it lets me spot the holes in paper at 100yds. Excellent rifle, and the accutrigger is smokin'!

The only problem with the HMR is the 150 yd coyote shots. Thats why I was thinking Fireball. I may get an HMR for Jacks and still just use my AR for Yotes.

Another vote for the 17. Although I don't like that thumbhole, laminated stock. It almost doubles the price. Any caliber good for coyotes is going to have the "devastating at longer distances than you need" problem. Shoulnd't be too much trouble with a 17 to put one in the ear.

I don't know anything about the 221 fireball round; but a friend I had back in CO had a 527 carbine in 223, and it was a neat little rifle. The trigger had a little creep in it, but you could push it forward and set it and it would break very cleanly at around 2 lbs. I've been wanting to pick up one of these in 7.62X39.

My vote goes to something a bigger and more powerful than the .17 HMR, just not enough for consistently clean kills on something the size of a coyote. .270 is an ammo that's readily available and plenty of power.
