Hunters - what's your big game hunting rifle?
What do you guys use?
I'm looking at bolt action rifles and considering the 30-06 or 300 win mag. Just real curious about what I should be looking for when purchasing a rifle for Moose, Elk and Bear.

30-06 here. The -06 will cover Moose, Elk, and Bear, but the 300 will do it "more handily"

Hello Grizz,
For what you want to hunt and your choice I would go with the .300 Win Mag. Its my favorite caliber .,I've carried a 300 win into the field since the 70's. Recoil can be a bit of trouble, However as with anything recoil is relative. The '06 is no way a slouch either, Same bullet different velocities. Ultimately dead is dead. Another caliber to consider would be the .338 Win Mag Peace Talon

I personally use 270 Win on Elk (Not hunted moose or bear yet) but I would really like to get a rifle chambered in 35 Whelen. The 35 Whelen is a 30-06 case with the neck open up to accept 35 caliber rifle bullets.
Here in Ohio though we are not allowed to use rifles to hunt big game mcb |

I have hunted all of the above here in Colorado, My usual hunting rifle is the 30.06, but 2 years ago my wife "took" that one from me, so I bought a 7mm and a .300 win mag(not the win short mag). Ive used them both, and I can tell you from experience, any of those three will be more than sufficient.

Grizz,
You may already have all of the ballistics info you want, but in case you'd like a little more, check out this ballistics comparison tool at Remington's website (Ballistics Comparison Charts at the middle of the page): http://www.remington.com/products/am...on/ballistics/ Comparing the .30-06, .300 WM, and the .338 WM, one finds that the WM rounds are significantly flatter and higher energy than the .30-06. The .300 WM is slightly flatter than the .338 WM as a result of its higher velocity, but it gives up a considerable amount of energy. |

A good bolt action with a Mauser controlled feed style bolt. The pusher bolts are stronger but the Mauser controlled feed is more reliable especial when cycling the bolt in awkward positions. My present bolt gun is a pre-65 Model 70 Winchester in 270Win if I was going to buy a new rifle I think I would look at CZ they are making some very nice Mauser action based bolt actions at a pretty good price right know. You can always spend a lot more money on some other really nice rifles out there.
