Ruger M77 Hawkeye / M77 Mark II
Any thoughts about these two rifles? Good? Bad? Love it? Hate it?
What caliber would you choose for Big Game (Moose, Bear, Elk) Any thoughts or other recommendations are appreciated. Thanks

I've got a stock 77V in .308 that will consistently shoot under an inch at 100yds with just about any 150gr factory ammo you can feed it.
For those who don't know, the V stands for varmint and has a heavier barrel. Mine is a MK-I, so it has the old style safety on it. I'd say the M77 MK-II is one of the better production bolt guns on today's market.

I wouldn't normally respond since I don't own a M77 MkII but given the dearth of responses, why not?
My FIL got a M77 MkII as a gift from his brother a couple months ago (his brother won it in a raffle). It is stainless with the laminate stock and is chambered in .338 Win Mag. I fired it about five times when we were breaking it in and sighting in the scope. It is a beautiful rifle. My understanding is that an improved trigger is one of features of the Hawkeye as compared to the MkII; however, I noticed nothing wrong with the trigger of the MkII. With the Leupold VX-II scope mounted on it, I was able to get a nice 3" group at 100 yards, and I'm a novice rifleman. My FIL and his brother were in the 1" range. Until now my FIL has been slaying deer with a 1903 Springfield .30-06 that his father modified for sporting use. This new rifle will serve him well when goes after bigger game in a few years. He's about 18 months from retirement and already thinking about where he wants to go to get moose or elk. |
