Favorite stock 10/22 variant?

There's an excellent chance Mrs. theEldest might get a new plinker next week. We currently have an old tube-feed Savage Stevens .22 that's having some big-time feeding issues (partly age and partly dirt), so I recommended we pick up a Ruger 10/22 as a cheap replacement fun shooter until we get it straightened out, if ever. I know there are blued steel and stainless barrels, wood stock vs. synthetic, etc.,--what's your favorite factory barrel/stock combination on a 10/22 for durability, rust, etc.? I have a feeling we'll end up getting whatever she likes best, but some owner reviews would be helpful.

That's the great thing about the 10/22. Buy one version and if you don't like it or decide to modify it you can. Heck, there's about 1,000,000 different ways to configure one and virtually every part has an aftermarket replacement.

My 10/22 is SS/Factory barrel with a BC folding stock and a Tasco Pro point red dot on top. Awesome plinking rifle. Great for weather resistance too, I don't cringe if it starts raining, or if it gets covered in mud When I am offroading.

you have to be real careful, I have about $900 in my other rifle (Target 10/22), if you get one be prepared to spend many a night thinking about what is next for it - Yes it is an addiction.

I suggest SS/Synthetic if you are just going to keep it all stock and need a little more weather resistance.

I like the one they make for WallyWorld. The box from mine says it's a K10/22-22. It has a 22" stainless barrel and a much nicer stock than the carbine (walnut vs birch). There is no crappy barrel band and there is some checkering also. Basically it's like a model 10/22DSP with a slightly longer stainless barrel. WallyWorld still has them, they go for about $224 in my area.

Stainless laminated rifle would be how I would go, but if your mrs. is petite, go with the carbine for the shorter length of pull.

I just rebuilt mine with a Hogue over-molded stock and a Clerke barrell. A three pound Timiny trigger was the finishing touch. Like someone said above, there's about a million different ways to trick out a 10/22. The best advice I can give you is to buy two and build up one for each of you.

Take her to the store and find the one that fits her. I have a stainless carbine that i use for squirrel hunting, and I have a blued target hvy bbl w/ thumbhole stock. Love em both, but it's a matter of picking the right tool for the job. If you do a lot of offhand shooting, don't get a bull barrel model, they are just sinfully heavy. If you shoot off a bench/bipod, don't get a carbine because it won't produce near as good results. I say get a stainless model just to make the maintenance easier on you. With blued rifles, it's sometimes easy to miss areas that need cleaned, and letting the powder sit there, esp. in humidity it will attract moisture and cause rust.

Actually, now that I've looked at it again, I retract the "Savage Stevens" designation (it was in my head for some reason)--it's actually a Springfield Savage, Model 87A. We picked up a brick of the cheap Remmy Golden Bullet hollow points, and it worked through the first half of the brick with only one or two FTF's--not bad for an old rifle that's probably never been cleaned. After about 200-250 rounds, it's like somebody threw a switch into jam-o-matic mode, and it refuses to feed (even after a cleaning). I'm going to detail strip it and maybe see if I can arrange a nice long soak in an ultrasonic to really get the deep crud out, but I'm also wondering if a spring or some other component in the feed system is weak. I dunno, but I'll try some new ammo too just to see how it works. Here's a pic of part of it (the only one I've got):

It shoots nice (when it works), and I've thought about getting the blued metal refinished because that's really the only appearance issue it's got, but the feed issue needs to be fixed regardless.

I like synthetic stocks (weigh less, can beat on them all day) and stainless receiver/barrel--for durability and looks. Not much happens when you beat on a stainless barrel, at least it doesn't show up as easily as bluing that got dinged up. You pay a premium for the stainless 10/22's though.
