I get lucky sometimes

About a month or so ago, a buddy asked me if I would be interested in buying his M-1 carbine. Said the only problem with it was at one point, he had given it to his former girlfriend and her brother "cleaned" it up. Sight unseen, I said sure, I'd be interested. How much? $175.00. So I said OK. Well, Sunday, I gave myself a fathers day present and got it. It's all broken down now so I can work on the stock and try to get it back to as close to original as possible.

But, for $175.00, I don't think I did too bad.

Nice find!
Paint stripper and a nice stain should make it pretty again

Cheers,

Mix up a 50.50 mix of tung oil and boiled linseed oil after you get it stripped. apply several light coats giving it about 8hrs dry time between coats till you get the desired finish.

What a good deal...

Who is it made by? Is it a GI issue or Iver Johnson commercial Carbine?

If its a GI Carbine...even a Korean War rebuild mixmaster...yes...its worth at least 500 bucks. Congrats. I its a low number maker like my Rock-ola...it might be worth considerably more money.

If its a Plainfield, Iver Johnson or other commercial Carbine...you paid about what its worth. It might be a good shooter...it might not.

Whichever model you have - YES - strip that awful shiny polyurethane from the stock and put a linseed oil finish on it. It will look much better.

They're an absolute blast to shoot. The 15 rounders are more reliable than that 30 rounder.

It's an Inland. By the serial number, between Jan & Aug '45. (It's in the upper third of the range of numbers there -- 6848XXX). Got a lot of that paint off, still have some work to do, but the wood looks really good. Will get some BLO soon and as soon as I'm sure I've got all the paint off, will start applying.

After spending a number of hours over the past week and a half, I got all that awful paint stripped, rubbed in BLO for the past few days and cleaned every thing up. Quite satisfied with how it turned out.

Nope, just got it back together. Hope to get to the range soon, though.
