question about removing blueing from a barrel.

i have a old winchester model 250 .22cal lever action. the barrel is blued with some rust forming on it. i want to completely take the bluing off and have a stainless barrel. is this possible, and if so how should i do it and keep the unblued barrel safe from rust.

thanks in advance
matt.

polish it with polishing compound and a dremel, then keep it oiled

OK fella, here is the gunsmith's secret for removing blueing...toilet bowl cleaner...something like "the works" . or if you feel like going to the hardware store muriatic acid works real swell. the acid in the toilet cleaner will take the blueing right of with just genle wiping. HOWEVER, be sure once you're done wiping it down with acid that you wipe it down with windex or some other ammonia based cleaner to nuetralize the acid or you'll have one hec of a rusty gun inside of an hour.

Buy a couple gallon jugs of distilled white vinegar (or however much you need), soak barrel for 10-15 minutes until the bluing comes off. Easy and safer than harsh chemicals, not to mention cheap. Just thoroughly clean and re-oil the barrel when you're finished to prevent rust.

I did this with my Sig 226 barrel as an experiment and it came out perfectly. Once the bluring was off I just used some non-abrasive metal polish and shined it up. It looked great.

naval jelly & scotch brite will get you to bare metal easily & quickly.

Here's a link showing how it's done -

I recently refurbished a rifle and was shocked at how easily & quickly this stuff works. Make sure you where protective gloves!

If you've got a mechanic or gunsmith buddy, ask if you can use their beadblaster. Takes off everything not supposed to be there and leaves a nice satin-ish finish when you're done, depending on the media.

You can use a 50/50 solution of water and muriatic acid dip it for 10 seconds then rinse it for a minute or two this will remove the blue. You do realize that the metal under the blue is not stainless steel, it will rust if not cared for.
