Stupid bi-pod questions

Is a harris bi-pod a brand or a type of bi-pod?

I need an adaptor to attach a bipod to my AR15 tactical hand guard. Do most bi-pods attach with a standard attachment system or are they all different? Basically I don't want to buy a $25 adaptor and find out it only works with a brand of bi-pod in $100+ dollar range.

I ask my question here and not AR15.com because I don't want to listen to some range queen talk about how not spending $249+ on a bi-pod is a waste of money and only fit for airsoft rifles.

Harris is a brand name and the standard by which just about all others are judged. Considering that most of them are designed to use the sling attachment point on a bolt gun (not a standard 1913 rail) then yes you will need an adapter. I've tried a few other brands and have been sorely disappointed with them on my .308's. So for me, while Harris is a bit more expensive, it's worth it. Other options are things like the Versa-pod (more expensive), clip-ons (old style that clamp to the barrel) and the more novel and my personal AR favorite.. the GripPod. That one is a VFG with the bipod legs folded inside the grip tube. I use one on my support rifle and think it's pretty damn worth it.

I agree, I got an expensive Harris bipod for my .308 because the genuinely very knowledgeable salesman told me I'll just end up there anyway. No regrets. I think it was $95, seemed like a LOT of money but it sure is good.

I drilled the free-float tube of my AR and installed a sling swivel stud. The Harris attaches easily. My Harris bipod is sitting in a drawer; doubt that I'll ever take it out, unless it's to sell it.

I've got a Rock Mount (9"-13") bi pod from Walmart for $40. It works great and looks just as good as a Harris imo.

That's the brand I started with. The legs torqued out of position about ever 3rd shot and finally were warped after about a 45rnd afternoon. Took it back and got the Harris

Might just be that I shoot prone and in the dirt and rocks a lot, but the harris has held up for the last 3 years.

Ya, I had one of the legs come loose but nothing serious. I've used it almost every weekend since January (including some varmint hunting) and it has held up fairly well.

7 years, pbbbttthh. I have had my el cheapo on dozens of rifles for probably close to 20 years. Looks like Hell now, but still works as good as the day I paid less than $10 for it. Looks identical to a Harris, just without the price tag

It's all good. Most of the time though, the el-cheapo's don't even come close to holding up as well as the Harris. This isn't to say there aren't other brands that do as well, or even other options that fit the bill. I personally have had a good bit of luck with the Harris I have as well as the GripPod I have. So those are the two that I will recommend.

I can see where if the weapon is not beat on or roughed around as much as I do to mine, then yeah, one of the others would do more than fine. Especially if the only time it really gets used is during hunting season or the range.
