.308 AR Questions

After finally finishing my first RRA AR-15, I've got ideas in my head for the next project. I actually already have a complete lower that I built that consist of a stripped RRA reciever, 2 stage trigger kit and a Magpull stock with adjustable pull and check weld. I've already set my mind on building a Varmint but I'm considering perhaps going to a .308 instead of a 5.56

1. Will my complete lower work with a .308 upper or are .308 lowers different than their 5.56 counterparts?

2. I'd like to stick with RRA but are there any recommendations for other .308 Varmint uppers?

3. What kind of range can I expect from a well built .308 with match grade ammo and good optics? I've built my CQC rifle now its time to build my long distance shooter.

Thanks in advance!

I thought about doing a .308 build myself, but ammo price changed my mind. I can only answer the question on the lower. That is no. The mag well is larger on the .308.

That is kind of what I thought but I wasn't 100% sure. Looks like I might stick with the 5.56 unless I can convince a friend to buy my current lower and build a new setup. I'm still curious if the range is worth the extra cost on ammo?

Not to worry. The .223 is a great varmint round with excellent range. A nice heavy stainless 24" barrel would get great. Then you can really reach out and touch some thing.

But yeah, many things in a .308 lower are bigger than the regular .223 lower. There are a few other calibers you can put on that .223 lower though. They might not me long range but they could be fun (6.5 Grendel, 6.8, and that new Thumper round). Hell, there's even 9mm.

I own a DPMS LR308 with a 22in barrel. It is very accurate and I paid $860. I would price the DPMA model before going for the RRA 308 rifle. Second choice for me would be the Bushmaster 308 because it uses FAL magazines and you can get those very cheap.

But you can't get the rifle "very cheap", as it got discontinued and has pretty much dried up.

The DPMS rifles are about the best bang for your buck in a .308 AR configuration. I've come close to getting an AP4 (their M4 type .308 rifle) thing a few times. It looks pretty bad-ass and has gotten great reviews (including rifle of the year from American Rifleman).

Problem is that I have an AR10T-LW and I'd sort of like to keep the parts common by getting Armalite's similar gun to the AP4. But it costs about $300-$400 more.

I was told $1200 for one of the DPMS 308s. Forgot which model it is but I think $860 is a dandy of a price. Heck I paid that much for my Stag.

Mine was a screaming deal from someone that needed the money. It was a consignment gun that wasn't selling. I have seen some others on gunbroker for about $910.

Thanks for the input. I might just stick with building the 5.56 24" Varmint I have had plans for already. I've got a great lower already so it would be much cheaper for me to only buy the Varmint upper compared to a whole new rifle.

Maybe I'll have to wait and just pick up a Remington 700 in .308!
