Need a little help with a pending shotgun purchase..

I'm looking to purchase my first shotgun, and I have a line on a used Mossberg 500a 12 gauge with a 20" barrel and (excuse my ignorance) what appears to be an 8 shot magazine with a case for $175 at a local pawn shop. Now, I gave it the once over, and everything looks good, but I don't have any experience with shotguns. Any tips on what I should be looking for?

thanks in advance!

Make sure both slider bars on the forearm are solid and in place. Thats the only problem I've ever encountered with a used shotgun. There is several other things to look for like OA condition, inside the barrel, make sure the safety functions ect. If it's in good condition that is a great deal. It sems there is more Rem 870 fans around a couple of forums that I frequent and I'm sure there will be some here that will recomend the 870. It is a very good shotgun but I've always had great results and performance from my Mossberg's.

If the gun is in decent shape, that is a pretty stellar deal!

I have had my Mossberg 500 for about 17 years now and it's never let me down. While I do own three Remington shotguns (and a few others ), My 'ole Mossy still holds a special place in my heart... It is the first gun I ever bought for myself!

IIRC, the 500 only has one-side-action-slider. But really, I've see 500's go on sale at Big-5 pretty regularly for around $200.00. I carried an 870 for too many years. Much more durable, but I like the Mossberg safety better. But when I say the Remy is more durable, I mead it will put up with 200 years of abuse as opposed to the Mossy's maybe 100 years of abuse. So a moot point for us mere mortals. Both my go-to shotguns are Mossbergs. One 500 and one 590. I'd double-check your local sale prices, then not hesitate to buy whatever Mossberg you feel is the best value.

The Maverick's from Mossberg have only one. The 500 6 & 8 shot 18" & 20" barrel persuader models have two. I have the 8 shot persuader and my wife's is actually a youth turkey gun. These are the guns in my pic. They both have dual slider bars.

PS, Mine came with the plastic furniture and my wife's came with the wood. We swapped cause she liked the plastic better and I liked both.

My book has 25 models of Mossberg 500s but the one I think you have is listed at the following prices:

NIB = $250
Exc = $200
V.G = $175
Good = $150
Fair = $125
Poor = $100
