A pair of Russians followed me home
On Saturday Mrs. theEldest and I drove a pleasant 85 minutes or so up the road to Prescott, AZ to make a personal visit to J&G Sales with the intent of looking at 91/30's and SKS's to start filling out my current area of interest--Russian rifles. After looking and pestering the sales staff with questions I finally decided to pass up the Finnish M-39 I had my eye on for a couple others:
The first is a Tula-marked 1934 M-N hex-receiver 91/30. There's still quite a bit of cosmo to remove and the wood needs just a little help (especially the foregrip), but the metal bits are nice and the bore is one of the brightest I've ever seen....(these pictures don't do them justice) ![]() ![]() Like I mentioned above, I was also interested in an SKS on this trip. After perusing some Yugo's which were nice enough without anything really blowing my socks off, I ran across this beauty that came in on trade from a previous collector..... ![]() ![]() ....a 1954 Russian Tula-marked SKS. Add in another 900 rounds of my new favorite Bulgarian 54R (light-ball this time), but leaving out the Nagant revolver (I was already a bit over budget), it turned out to be a terrific daytrip. P.S--I also have to add a big +42 for the guys at J&G, especially Ronny. They took all the time I needed to explain things, brought me multiple examples of each rifle to fondle and choose between, and there was zero "are you still here?" gun-store attitude--a great experience.

Thanks. Due to my limited budget I'm going more for one of each type (1 SKS, 1 AK, etc), but the Mosins are cheap enough I can justifiy one of each production variant. I've got an M44, so with the 91/30 in the fold, that leaves.....an M38, a Finn M-39, an M91, and about a half dozen others.
And that's not even counting the Nagant revolver, the Makarovs, the......

Are they still as anal about their paperwork? Last time I was at a gun show I picked up a 91/30 (couple years ago) and I swear they were the best I've ever seen when it comes to their paperwork. They probably threw away half of them for people abbreviating instead of spelling it out etc.

Nice rifles!
I have a 1952 Tula that was unissued when I bought it back in 1989 (for 75 dollars). The Russian and Chinese military SKSs are the best shooters of the bunch - be glad you passed the Yugo for the Russkie. - Brickboy240

The hex-receiver Tula M-N came home for the princely sum of $89. The Russian SKS was at about $379 (the same as the M-39's), which is a bit high for an SKS, but compared to the conditions of the Yugo's I looked at ($229 for "excellent"), the jump in the quality of the rifle for the Tula was worth the extra $150. The prices on mil-surps have been steadily climbing (and aren't going to be coming down anytime soon, if ever), so I consider it money well-spent to get a nice example before they go any higher.
