DuraBake Enamel on my Sig?

Hey guys. I've been thinking that I'd like to recoat my P226. Originally I wanted to send it in to Robar for a complete package, but theres no way that I can wait 6-10 weeks right now for the turnaround.

I was browsing LCW's website and noticed that they have a duracoat product that comes in an aerosol spraycan called "DuraBake". All of my airbrushing stuff is buried in my storage unit back in ohio, so the ease of application really looks appealing to me since it comes in a spraycan. Apparently you just spray it on and stick it in the oven for a couple of hours at 180 degrees, and you're good to go.

Does anyone have any experiance with this stuff? I still plan on eventually sending my gun in to Robar, but that will be further down the road. I'm looking for a cheaper, faster solution right now as long as it will hold up. Any thoughts or comments on DuraBake?

This is what I'm up against:

Here is a link for the product:

I know the flak's comin' for this comment, but I would NOT apply anything that came in a can to a fine pistol like a SIG. I doubt seriously it would last.

Wait....save your money..and have a quality finish (like Robar) put on that nice P226. Why chance such a nice pistol to something that is basically expensive spraypaint that goes in the oven? I seriously doubt that junk will hold up to hard use, so you'll just be stripping it off later on. Why bother?

I too am saving for a RoBar treatment for my Swiss P225...I really think it will be worth the wait. SIGs are high quality guns that deserve a good finish. If it shoote well for you...wait and do it right.

Put some Mil-Pro or Blue Armadillo on it for now and shoot happy for now. I have never seen a SIG P-Series rust. From the photo, that just looks like carry wear...no biggie...it just means it was used and not a safe queen.

Agreed. I see your point, no flak coming from me. I was just looking for an inexpensive way to touch up the slide until I can afford the wait time. It's not the price that is holding me back, it's the 10 week turnaround. This is my duty weapon now - until I buy something else that I can carry while I wait for the service to be completed, can't send it in. Although the gun sure does have charecter, which is growing on me every day.

Why not try Norrells or KG gunkote, both are thermal cured finishes that are very durable. More durable than Duracoat...Duracoat offers more colors and camo patterns, but to cure completely I hear it takes around 4 weeks.

With KG or Norrell's you bake it for an hour and it's ready to go.

I thought about refinishing my Sig P6 (P225) but then realized that if it looked that good, then I would never take it with me. I'd feel to guilty of marring the finish . as my P225 stands with the holster wear, I don't have a problem sticking it in a holster. I live where there's no humidity, so rust is not a problem. I personally would keep it as it is especially if it's a workhorse, gives it character. . I would avoid spray cans as well.

I am with brickboy240. I sure like my hard chrome from trippresearch.com. Still looks brand new after a year and a half and I was only without my slide for 12 days.

I agree with looking elsewhere, Robar isn't the only game in town. Accurate Plating and Weaponry does all types of refinish work, and the work is top notch. In fact, lots of manufacturers use them for finishing. They hard chromed all the metal on my HS2000 about three years ago, and it is AWESOME!

Some folks won't refinish an anodized aluminum frame, but Cogan will, and they'll do it right!

I don't think the wear on that P226 looks that bad. Sure, it does not look new, but it was less than half the price of new...was it not?

I'd look at that honest wear, like you would an old pair of blue jeans - nicely broken in and comfortable. New jeans are stiff and uncomfortable and you may not feel as comfortable wearing them anywhere.

Alot of it is individual taste, but I kinda like the weathered look on guns, versus the "Safe queen" pristine look. Its a working gun...not a comemorative one of a kind piece.

Spend your money on a trigger job or springs and some extra mags and a good holster, instead. Maybe some practice ammo or night sights (if it does not have them). I really think thats money better spent than on a fancy finish.

The best looking pistol in the world is not worth a damn to me, if I cannot shoot it worth a damn or if it has a crappy trigger and worthless magazines.

You know guys, I've been thinking long and hard about this very topic for the last couple of days, and I really think that I'm with most of you as far as letting the gun wear in just the way it is.

I do think that I'm going to send it to Sig for a couple weeks though for the Sig Service Plan - have them clean it, replace the springs, and install the new Meprolight/SigLite night sights on it. Other than that, you're all correct - its a working gun. So, I'm gonna work it!

Sounds like a plan to me. After thinking about it, I really like the look the way it is. Have fun.
