HD Shotgun Storage Question

I'm probably going to be getting a shotgun that I plan on using for home defense, and I'm curious how others store their HD shotguns. For my XD, I have a small gun vault by the side of my bed, but what's the best storage option for a shotgun? I live by myself, but I frequently have guests over. I usually don't have children over, but every once in a while friends with children do come over.

How and where do y'all store your HD shotgun?

Do you store the shotgun with or without a round chambered?
(if this is going to turn into the same weekly debate as I've seen with the XDs, just let me know. I don't need to hear the same arguments again.)

Thanks!

Mine is accessable but out of sight. Rarely do kids come in my house but before they do I unload all the accessable firearms.

I like to keep pump action shotguns "cruiser ready": empty chamber, full magazine, safety off.

I also have to add: I consider a shotgun to be a useful weapon but with VERY limited application inside the house. I have practiced moving around the house without poking the muzzle around the corner where an adversary could grab it - and it can't be done (by me in my house, anyway). If I needed to clear the house the handgun is much better. If someone is kicking the door in, it's probably shotgun time.

Mine is easily accessible, as are most of my guns. I rarely have visitors over, and never with children though. When visitors do come over they know that they are welcome in every room of my apartment EXCEPT for my bedroom...that is my private area.

On the subject of shotguns I keep one in the chamber, safety on. If someone is in my home in the middle of the night I'd rather not take the chance that they hear the pump and know my approximate location....if the first shot of 00 buck Magnum shell tearing into their butt doesn't give them the understanding that I want them the hell out of my home...I doubt anything will.

Ditto

And if I had kids, it would be in the gun locker during the day.

My father keeps his Mossberg 500 by his bed, not in the open but in sight if you're looking. He keeps it with empty chamber, safety off. I didnt live with him but he had 2 kids and everyone just knew not to F with that gun.

I have all of my guns in my bedroom, although I'll probably move my Kimber to my desk and my 20ga to the basement when I get my 590A. Anyways I keep a full mag in one drawer and the XD in another. My closet houses my 11-87, 20ga, and .22 rifle. My Kimber is in the same drawer but with a cable lock. My one drawer has 2 mags, 5 12ga shells and 5 20ga shells and a full .22 mag. Like I said I want to distribute the weapons a little better when I get some more.

I wouldn't worry about distributing the weapons, I'd worry about theft. Too many guns are stolen.

I used keep the shotgun mounted with a redneck gun rack on the back of the headboard. Full Magazine, empty chamber, safety off. I now keep the CAR-15 in the same place, loaded with glasser safety slugs, loaded magazine, safety on, bolt locked back with the dust cover closed. (My fiance couldn't use the shotgun very well, and the AR is all else I really have that won't shoot through five blocks of houses).
