Fell in love with a Sig today... :-/
Well, I couldn't help it. I was at one of the local ranges today and saw a Sig P226 sitting in the case. It was pretty worn (ex LEO's weapon), but the action was smooth and it was very clean other than the significant amount of wear on the exterior. I asked to take a look at it, and as soon as I picked it up, I was in love. I have never held something more comfy than my XD until today, and the 226 definitely feels better. I think it's the fact that the grip is a little fatter - I have big hands, so it fit me very well. I was easily able to manipulate all of the controls (mag release, decocker, slide release), which is another plus.
All of this is true with my XD too, but the Sig felt damn good with the wider grip. The clerk estimated that it probably had between 10K-15K rounds through it, and it was priced at $375. He said that with a new barrel and springs, it would be good as new. On top of that, he said that if my XD was in as good of condition as I described to him, he'd give me $400 for it. Pretty good considering I paid $470 six months ago for it - damn near breaking even. I'm torn. I don't know if I should save up and just buy a new one, or snap up the used one for $375 and get a new barrel, new springs and a full Robar recoat on it. This will be my duty sidearm, so I'm leery about picking up a used gun for that purpose unless $375 is a HELL of a deal for it. Any suggestions? I really want this gun, but I need to use a fair degree of common sense here. I don't think that any Sig would up and crap out after 10XXX+ rounds, but if it's going to cost just as much in replacement parts as it would to just buy a new one, I don't see much of a point there...

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm very tempted here. I mean I love the hell out of my XD, but I've wanted a Sig for a long time...and despite being beat up, a complete Robar recoat, inside and out, is $285. That plus the $375 for the gun totals $660, which is STILL much less than a new one, and the gun will look brand new anyway. Anyone know how much a new barrel would cost for a 9mm P226?
I also hear that Sig is working with a Federal Agent right now who has over 100,000 documented rounds fired through a P226. If that's true, 15K rounds is barely scratching the surface! Sooooo tempted.... Edit: Brand new factory SIGARMS 9mm barrels are only $159 from topgunsupply.com. I think I need to have a talk with the wifey tomorrow, and go back to the range to test fire the Sig.

You're talking $819 for a USED sig w/ a new barrel. How about all the springs? Skip it. You can get a NEW 226 for less money. For example: http://sigforum.com/eve/forums/a/tpc...35/m/956109298 . Check out that thread. The MAP price is $768 I believe and the sell price should be lower if you call. There's a few people on Sigforum.com that have great prices on new Sigs.
Then you have the CPOs like greenspartan is talking about. I bought my CPO 226 w/ 4 mags "new" for $500. It had been refinished and Sig checks them out completely so I don't have to worry about replacing the springs and poor finish (they refinish, replace springs, update parts, etc. etc. or whatever is needed on the particular gun). |

Wow, CPOs for $515? That does really sound like a better deal.
I was just hoping to get a good trade in on my XD, becasue I can't afford to be without a duty weapon at all, and I don't have whole lot of cash on hand to cover the cost of a new gun without selling the XD at the same time. Would it be a better deal if I offer them $300 for it?

I agree with others here; $819 can pretty much get you a brand new 226. You shouldn't have to spend that much for a fixer upper. I just look up the gunbroker and this one comes up:
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...?Item=70444059 Personally I would just get a brand new 226 or a CPO, if you are on budget. Then sell the XD on the Trading Post to offset the cost. Good luck. |

I'd go the CPO rte personally. I did not go that rte with my P228 but in hindsight I wish I had. My future Sig purchases (and yes, I expect there will be at least one more) if not brand new will be CPO unless it is just an outstanding deal.
