Air Force lays out specs for its next handgun

The Air Force is asking gun makers for their input on the design of the next handgun for airmen.
The service issued a memo on April 16 laying out its demands. The service wants a weapon with a baseline caliber of .45, though gun is required to be reconfigurable for multiple bullet sizes. The ideal weapon would have a service life exceeding 25,000 rounds and has a grip that can be tailored for any user, according to the memo.
In addition, the memo set out specifications for an accompanying silencer. The device must be able to reduce discharge noise to 140 decibels at least, weigh no more than 10 ounces and have a service life of 3,000 to 10,000 rounds.
The required monthly production rate is 7,500 handguns, starting six months after the forthcoming contract is awarded, the document said.
The information brought in by the memo will be used to create a request for proposals at a yet unannounced time.
Gen. T. Michael Moseley, Air Force chief of staff, first introduced the idea of new Air Force handguns at a House Appropriations Committee hearing in February. An unspecified portion of the $7 billion Air Force supplemental budget request is set aside for handgun acquisition.

Thats not much of a service life (25,000 rounds).

Several of the gun companies ramped up for the Army when it was looking and some great accomplishments were made. This is going to be interesting.

hmm I'm not an HK geek, but last I checked there were a couple of short comings in the HK45's that would rule it out. Grip resizing for one, interchangeability for the caliber would be another I would think. I'll readily admit that I'm not certain on that but again I'm not an HK geek so they might have something in that arena that I just haven't paid attention to.

Honestly this looks right up the S&W M&P line's alley. Hmmmm

With a lucrative government contract possibility it seems easy enough to make some changes that would make ti compliant.

However when i read the baseline .45 cal bullet i was surprised! lol, then i read the multi-caliber system and i was even more surprised!

GO AF!

The HK45 has interchangeable backstraps, a la P2000. Really no different than the M&P except that the M&P is easier to swap backstraps on. As far as caliber interchangeability, I'm interested to find out just how much the HK45 and P30 have in common...

Sorry, I saw that after I posted & then failed in an attempt to delete my hasty comment.
