Shotgun for home protection

Alright guys, I need some serious help. I am currently an owner of an XD-45ACP which I love. I am now in the market for a shotgun for home protection only. I want a tactical shotgun (meaning 18" barrel length w/ 6-8 round capacity) I know a lot of you out there have Remington 870's and Mossbergs. I'd like to keep it at the $350 or lower range, and I can always modify at a later time. Anyone have any suggestions? Keep in mind I have never owned a tactical shotgun.

Remington all the way, you can pick up a used one cheap. I found my latest one on gun broker for 160.00.

Maverick 88 Security!

They can be had for $160-180 BRAND NEW, and they are basically a Mossberg 500 (tried and true design) with a trigger guard safety (instead of the Mossberg's tang safety). It's like an illegitimate offspring of a Mossberg 500 and a Remington 870, and cheaper than either one!

I have the 20" Maverick 88 Security model on the way, and I also own a Remington 870 with 18.5" barrel.

870 without a doubt. You'll never find a shotgun that is more reliable.

P.S. I love AutoCAD too! I use it for all of my 2D floor plans and 3D walkthroughs.

Guys, I really appreciate it. I'll do some research on all of your recommendations. Jonny, I use AutoCAD everyday, have been for over 7 years. I love it and hope to one day teach how to use it.

Also, I failed to mention that I owned a Benelli Nova Pump and really liked the feel of it. I never shot it because I didn't have the chance. After a friend of mine got broken into, I offered the Nova to him for super cheap, since all of his most sentimental guns were stolen, I knew he needed something for hunting season and knew that I needed something more tactical.

Ok one last question. Say I decide on a shotgun and want to order it online. Who is a reputable place to order from, and what kind of process do I have to go through to get it? I hear a lot about FFL. So does that mean before I order I have to check with a gun shop willing to accept the order? Or does the website usually give me an option of where to have it sent to that they have it arranged through. Thanks for your help in advance guys.

Easiest is to check with a local gun shop/dealer and see if they will do the transfer for you. It shouldn't cost you mor than $20- $25 for the transfer. The place you buy it from then ships it to that dealer for transfer to you.

Some online stores have FFL's on file for reference, but you still need to arrange it with the FFL. This does not necessarily mean a shop, though. If you have a local/state gun owners/ccw forum online (you probably do), ask around. The local shop's never a bad option, just not always the cheapest.

P.S. Mossberg 500 (not the 590) is what my infantry unit used, so that's what I use at home, too. Never had a problem. Mav 88's are almost the exact same thing, but cheaper.

Mossberg 500's do too. Got mine at Bi-Mart for $220 with 18.5" and 28". It's a regular package they offer (normally it's around $250, though, I think. I got it on sale.)
