Powerful Carbine?

I'm looking for a powerful, bolt action carbine in a light weight. I want something that'd stop a bear (not a grizz), but would be good for hunting. Any suggestions? I like the idea of a bolt gun because it's short and light. I'd go for a cheap double, but I don't think those exist.

Mosin-Nagant M-44

If the muzzle blast the sound and the bullet dosen't kill them you can flip out the bayonet and skewer it/him.

The 7,62x54R round is very cheap and plentiful and has ballistics very much like 30-06. You can get modern hunting rounds from the major ammo mauf. that will be better for hunting/protection.

+1, jeep. I have a Mosin and concur completely with your recommendation. It is a fantastic carbine!

The only thing is that the last one I shot had to be cycled with the help of a 2X4 (not really). Follow-up shots weren't really all that fast. However, is there an easy way to fix this?

Have you considered a lever action model 94? You can get one in 30-30 which might stop a bear, and is very light.

Yeah you have to do the inital cleaning very good. The ones I have shot have cycled VERY smoothly.

What happens is cosmo builds up in the chamber and when you shoot it the cosmo melts slightly adhereing to the bullet. This can get reall bad on laqured steel casings. It makes a kind of glue type substance. Get a chamber brush and scrub the chamber very good. I know some people who have used a drill for this procedure.

Might isn't a word I would want to hear when I'm facing down a bear.

Marlin lever-action guide gun in 45-70. Fun, light, holds 4+1 (I believe) and plenty powerful for Bear, yet can be loaded for whitetails or what have you.

+1 again. In my opinion the 30-30 is too light a cartridge for bear.
