10/22 in .22LR or .17HMR?

Want to get into one of these just because they're so much fun to shoot and mod.

I know .22LR is the old stand by, but these .17HMR guys are making a lot of noise and I'm trying to decide if I should delve into that as well.

Thoughts?

If its for plinking I would pick .22, if its for little pests, I would go for the .17.

I was told that Ruger was not making a .17HMR on the 10/22 platform. The guy I talked to said it was on;y in a bolt action. If I'm wrong let me know cause I want one.

I thought the .17 got discontiuned?

Personally I would stick with .22. Ammo is WAY cheaper. Anything I could kill with a .17 I could kill just as easily with a .22 from the ranges I would normally shoot.

.17 is a fun new little round that people are enjoying these days. It, just like many other rounds, in time will fade in my opinioun.

It boils down to this, as I see it. If I want to kill the varmit I pull my .22 LR and fire away... If, for whatever reason I feel my .22 LR won't do the job, my next step is either going to be a shotgun or .223/5.56x45 round out of my AR.

The .17 is, from what I see, a "match round"... For plinking/shooting or even the pest killer, I don't think you can go wrong with the .22 LR.

I shot a .17 at the range the other day, and for plinking I would stick to a 22. But if you want to shoot 100yard+ range I would go with a .17

The 17 HMR has to be built off of a 10/22 Magnum, and not a regular 10/22. All you need is a 10/22 magnum and an aftermarket barrel. Magazines are the same.

If you have a 10/22 in 22 LR, you can transform it into a 17 HM2 (hornady Mach 2) by getting a new barrel and bolt, because the bolt needs more weight to function safely with the 17 HM2.

If you don't have a 10/22 in 22 LR, you owe it to yourself to get one. You can always pick up a nice Savage or Marlin 17 HMR bolt action in the $150 to $300 range to supplement your plinking sessions.

I kill big jackrabbits at 100-200 yards all the time with one shot. The same jacks take 3-4 shots with a 22 at 30 yards. I'll stick with my 17.

+1. I've got both a Ruger 10/22 (a MUST HAVE for every gun owner IMO) and a Savage 93r17 which is a tack driver.
