AK / SKS gurus get in here!

OK, I just purchased an SKS-M Norinco that takes 30 round AK mags.

When I went to latch the bolt open, I didn't know how to do it... On my normal SKS, I could push up this little slide latch and it would serve as the bolt catch, but the SKS-M doesn't seem to have such a slider. Furthermore, it doesn't seem to go into the "bolt open" position after the last round like the SKS.

So... is this normal for the SKS-Ms (or AKs) to NOT have the bolt come open after the last shot or do I need to take it to a shop to get it fixed?

Thanks for helping out an SKS-M noob.

Cheers,

That is normal for ak's to not hold the bolt open after the last shot. There is a mod you can do to get the bolt to hold open. I believe it is the follower on the mag you change. Some ak mags i forget which country are bolt hold open mags.

some do, some don't. mine doesn't, use some yugo mags. most AKs do not, Saiga and type 81s do. I don't think there is room in the SKS for the bolt carrier catch to be used with AK mags.

The SKS-D & SKS-M have that removed from the gun in order to alter it to take the AK magazine. The bolt of the SKS is also machined down so that you can insert a magazine without having the bolt open, this is not possible with the standard SKS. Your SKS is fine no need to do anything to it.

Ah. So....
I looked at some videos from Tapco and looks like their AKs bolt close after the mag is emptied.
Jeez, now I have to do remember my shot count for effective reloading... looks like that old adage of not messing with perfection (SKS original, 10 rounds, open bolt when emptied).
The Tapco clear mags looks like an viable option.
Great weapon otherwise.
Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

Cheers,

Got the SKS-M off of Gunbroker.com for $325.
It had an aftermarket folding stock so I don't know what version it was.
I've put my Tapco stock on it along with some 922r compliance parts.
After the US made mags, I should be good to go.
Pictures/Range report coming soon

Cheers,

$325? You paid a bit too much, I believe. You can get them on several sites for $169 stock... change the furniture to whatever you want for $50-$75 (tapco T6 collapsable stock rocks on a SKS). The conversion to Ak mags is kinda spotty. A lot of them don't feed very well with the AK mag and it makes reliablity really go down the drain. A standard SKS with a Tapco T6 stock and a Tapco 20rd SKS mag is about the best tactical setup you can easily and cheaply put together ^_^;

As far as the lockback issue, I'm pretty certain that gets removed when the reciever is modified to accept the Ak mags, so you just need to learn to count rounds.
