need a good .22 trainer/plinker/pocket gun

Money is getting real tight at my house and I'm looking to unload a few guns for cash and to trade for a .22 pistol.

The .22 pistol need to take up a 3 roles.

1) I need it as a trainer for my XD9 SC to save money on ammo.

2) I need it to be pocketable or at least be good as a summer CCW carry weapon, when I cannot carry my XD.

3) It needs to be dependable, and easy to use, as far as .22lr go. Since I will be using it as my backup CCW and as the 3rd backup at home to my XD and my wife's revolver.

I had 3 guns in mind.

First is the Beretta Bobcat. Its a good .22 pocket gun but I hear the sights are small and basic. Great pocket gun, but since its so small and has hardly any sights its a bad trainer. My only hope is to deal with it for the time being until I can get the funds together to get the XD .22 conversion kit when it comes out.

Second is the Taurus Pt22. I know the quality is 50/50, but it is almost the same size and function as the bobcat and unlike the Beretta Bobcat it has workable sights (correct me if I'm wrong with the beretta vs taurus sights, I have not physically seen the Bobcat yet). It is as close to the best of both world (pocketability/useable trainer for the XD) as I can get. I figure if I get a dud, I will take advantage of the lifetime warranty until its corrected.

Third choice is a Walther P22. This one also has people who love them and hate them. Its slightly larger and heavier than the Bobcat or the PT22 but is almost the same size as the XD SC just a few ounces lighter. Perfect trainer, but not very "pocketable"

All the other good .22 handguns like rugers, Beretta neo, and the Bersa Firestorm are too big and heavy to carry.

Anyone own any of these guns and could help me out with making a decision. Also if I'm missing something

First I should comment, Never would I ever consider a .22 lr a Carry gun. But to each there own.

I owned a Berreta Mdl 950 jetfire .25.. I loved it accurate to 15' and never malfunctioned on me. but I could not depend on it to provide the knockdown I was wanting. The others you have mentioned are fun, But I would recomend a Ruger Mark III 22/45, Same grip angle, controlls are close to the same, and Rugers Mark Series has been around for quite awhile, so they are time tested too..

I have a walther p22 and its a great little plinker, but I wouldn't recommend anything like that as a back up.

What you want doesn't exist. A trainer should be of comparable size and weight to your carry gun. A pocket gun by definition is too small for that. If you want a pocket gun for back-up, get a .380 or larger, there are plenty of guns out there that fit the bill. For a .22 trainer, the Ruger Mk III 22/45 is a great gun and feels similar to the XD.

Whoops, sorry...saw the 9SC too late. Well, I wouldn't personally use a .22 for self defense, but it's better than nothing. Personally, I think any shooting is good training. I'd go for a revolver with 9 shot capacity such as a taurus. It'd be more reliable (.22s have been known to missfire) and it would be cheaper. You can get snubbbies in the caliber and they're pretty fun. You can play "shoot fast" games with a DA, too. I found that if I can shoot a DA revolver or DAO auto, then I can do ok with my XD, too.

An XD9 SC.

Again when I am talking about carry it, I'm talking about shorts and T-shirt weather, where people only a small pocket pistol like an Kel Tec P32 or a NAA mini revolver, and at home it will be an extreme 3rd place backup. While I rather have a 9mm, I'm confident that if need be I can stop someone with a .22.

I have been enjoying shooting handguns for several years now and I shoot regularly. I'm going thru some serious money issues at this point in my life and the choice I have to keep up with my hobby is to sell off things I don't shoot much or are too expensive to shoot. That leaves me with shooting the two cheapest calibers around 9mm and .22lr, and while 9mm is cheap, I can shoot .22lr all day long for the cost of one box 9mm WWB.

I think some folks are too harsh on the .22, it's capable of significant damage.

That it is but it should only be used if thats all thats available. One shouldnt set out on the mission to find a .22 for CCW thats all, especially not when there are much better calibers for PP and in concealable size.

If you are a mouse. You will not stop a determined foe with a 22lr. You might kill them but not stop them.
