I'm glad I got my Garand from them before they sold out (technically they still have Rack Grade Greek Returns but reports are they are pretty rough:
http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/m1garand.htm I paid $447 shipped for my Field Grade HRA-built one but that was after nearly 100 days of waiting. The moral of the story with CMP is DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!

I'm interested in the M1 because my grandfather carried one in WWII, but I don't know that much about them. Any help with these questions would be appreciated:
1. What is the difference between the garand and the carbine? 2. The CMP website mentions that they don't have any carbine ammo. Isn't the carbine .30-06 like the garand? 3. Do garands at gun shows sell for a much higher price than when purchased from CMP? Thanks. |

The Carbine is .30 carbine and the Garand is 30.06, my FIL has a original M1 carbine that will be mine shortly he is 76 now and wants to pass some things down to us, he's mentioned it several times but I suppose it wouldnt be polite to push it,

The Garand weighs almost twice as much as the Carbine and as Frostyeyes mentioned, it shoots considerably different ammo. The Carbine was developed as a small, light rifle that wasn't intended for long shots (it's not a battle rifle like the Garand) but rather for close-quarters combat with better accuracy than a pistol. Even though they look somewhat similar, the Garand and Carbine share zero parts in common.

In high school me and a buddy went to the grandparents house to shoot his the carbine. Well my buddy started talking about how accurate these carbines were.
this is what my grandpa said: "The carbine is a officers gun that you could find laying all over the place because no one wanted to carry that inaccurate rifle. Try shooting someone from over that hill! (it was like 300-400 yards away) as soon as you see the out line of a person you had to shoot because you knew they were going to shoot you." that's about the only things my grandpa ever said about WW2
