Okay...I have decided on an AK over an AR...I am just unsure of what to buy. There are so many choices...and considering that it is going to be my only "non-hunting" rifle (for lack of a better word)...I want to buy the best one possible. I am willing to spend whatever it takes to buy the highest quality AK I can get my hands on...so please help point me in the right direction! Thanks...I know this is an XD forum, but i get better info from you guys then anywhere else!

I recommend you get a Saiga conversion.
A Saiga is a new Russian AK with a few modifications to make it legal to import. The modifications are relatively easy to reverse and viola, a genuine Russian AK. There are several people doing the conversions for sale, and many do it themselves. If you want a recommendation for a builder I'd suggest Tromix or Red Jacket. If this will be your only EBR you should get the best. Most of the AKs on the market are built from imported parts kits that run from brand new to worn out. So whatever you go with make sure the bore is in perfect shape. It will be if it's a Saiga (unless you're buying a used one). Choice of caliber is personal. If you go with 7.62x39 you'll find magazines are inexpensive and plentiful. If you choose another caliber magazines will cost more and be harder to find. .

If you get a "fully" converted Saiga you can use any furniture you like. But if you prefer wood you may want to look at an Arsenal SAM-7 or SAS-M7.
Arsenal is the American AK, top quality made from all new parts. But the price is somewhat higher than a converted Saiga. There are good quality AK builds out there from parts kits if you don't want to spend over $1k (which would be understandable). Check Atlantic for a wide selection of AKs from OK and inexpensive to glitzy and overpriced. http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/prog...ew.asp?CatId=2 .

So much to choose from.
But for my money, a $330 Romanian AK47 WASR-10 cannot be beat. Not the most accurate but it will eat anything you give it. Trigger has major slap, sites might be crooked, and some mags might not fit, but this thing just shoots and shoots. You can buy updated furniture for it such as folding stock and railed handguards from Tapco for only like $150 more, then you can tac it out. But a plain wooded AK looks pretty cool too. |

The 1.6mm receiver is going to be a little heavier than the standard 1mm, but it sure will be strong! If you order one from Atlantic be sure to read and follow the order instructions carefully and everything should go smoothly. .
