Ruger Red label
I need some help.
I went to Sportsman's Warehouse to look at pump shotguns in the $700.00 range. I don't own any shotguns so this will be my first shotgun purchase. I thought I would be perfectly happy with a pump shotgun in the $700.00 range that was until the rep put a Ruger Red Label, over and under, 12 guage, 28" barrel, $1199.00 into my hands. What would you do? Save longer for the Ruger over and under or go with a pump. I really like the over and under style. I really like the pumps shot capacity. I need to choose one, can't buy both.

i'm not a big fan of scatter guns, but they do have there place.
i dont think I whould pay over 1000 on any gun, i'v used shot guns that were in the 200 doller range and loved them. having said that if you dont buy what you realy want you'll always wonder what if?

I have two 12 ga shotguns. An Armsport Over/Under and a Verona semiauto. The O/U is my upland bird gun. Living in SD, we are in the middle of the best pheasant country in the world. The Red Label is a beautiful gun. The Semi is my duck/goose gun. Longer barrel and capacity. A good pump would certainly work for both. And if you get one with an interchangable barrel you could hunt other game with as well. Good luck

It all depends on what you want it for.
If all you want is a hunting gun, the over under is a nice choice. The limited capacity will make you conserve your shots and will make the hunt more challenging. If you want it to double for home defense, get a pump or an auto. The double barrel takes too long to reload to make an effective home defense weapon. Just my opinion though.

I use my XD for Home defense. So, this gun would be used primarily for hunting birds. I'm new at hunting, so I need a little direction/opinion on what you guys prefer when hunting.

Nothing points like an over & under My dad has a red label and its great, i like shooting my 28 gauge side by side a little more. If you are talking clays and upland birds i would take the ruger. Now if were talking ducks, geese i would go with a pump and get it in 3 and half mag versions which all novas are. if there attempting to charge you 700 for a pump thats insane, you looking more like high 400s even with combo sets. You can get a remington 870 3.5 for around 400's and reg 3 mags combo set for mid 300's and you can get bennillie novas for 350's. I have a rem supermag combo which i eventually modded with hogue compstock and hasting cantilever muzzle break rifled barrel with a leopold red dot for deer hunting since we have t use shotguns in south michigan. My dad has a nova in camo and 28in barrel for duck and goose its a real slick action. Just barrels are cheaper and theres a load of aftermarket for the 870 so i would probably take that first.

I have had a numebr of scatter guns in the past years. Before I would shell out that much I would buy me a good $300 to $500 over and under or pump to see if your going to stick with it. And I think that is a very high price for anything I am going to shoot birds with. Heck I still have my dads old single shot 12 gauge with the plastic stock that knock a bird down just as well as that fancy Ruger, which I am sure is a great shotgun but come on...thats going to be some expensive birds by the time you get a pay back on that thing. Just my 23 cents worth since you did ask lol.

I guess I really need to learn more about what type of shotgun is best for what.
If someone has time could you please give me a quick break down of what each is good for: side by side, over & under, pump, auto. Thanks Some have said that if I'm shooting ducks and geese go with a pump, if your shooting pheasant go with an over & under....why is this? I'm 98% sure I'm going to love this sport. I want 1 shotgun I can use for multiple things. I'm trying not to buy 1 gun for duck, 1 gun for pheasant, etc. or do I need to buy 2 guns? Is a $500.00 shotgun a good gun?? What do you mean by "scatter gun"? You guys are great. Thanks for any suggestions
