I've been thinking about buying a Ruger 10/22 for plinking at the range and teaching my kids firearms safety with. Sub $200 pricetag and there are hundreds of doodads available for them from countless manufacturers.

Go with a Ruger 10/22. No question about it...
Now Why? 1)Its a nice gun out of the box (scrub the barrel b4 shotting it for the first time). 2)So many accesories. Hicap mags..Ect. 3) The upgrades. My cheap 10/22 has cost me $600 so far. Many eventualy only end up using the stock reciver. Also try visiting rimfirecentral.com They are a great resource. |

There are alot of good rifles to choose from, but I have to agree with Tungsten. The 10/22 is hard to beat. It was the first gun I bought my son. He loved it. I just saw a new stainless model in the store a few days ago that I just might have to go back and buy for myself.

I'd have to jump on the 10/22 bandwagon myself. Great little plinker. Was my first rifle I bought for myself back in high school, and often regret that I sold it. And as slugger pointed out, they have the stainless version now. And it's just a tad more than the blued version.

I have a Marlin 795...at least I think it's a 795, lol. (Had a few beers tonight) It's been a fun little .22 and I love it every time I shoot it, but if I had it to do all over again, I probably would've went for the 10/22 like these guys are saying, simply for the upgrades. I haven't done a whole lot of research on my Marlin, but from what I gather the 10/22 is much more friendly that way.

Just reiterating what others have already said, Ruger 10/22 is an excellent choice. It was my first gun, and now many, many years later...it's my daughter's first gun. It's been extremely reliable and is a very versatile gun (many accessories & upgrades available).

The 10/22 is an excellent choice.
The Rhineland Arms mods can make it look pretty fancy too.

I think this thread has done me in. I'll be picking up a 10/22 at the local Walmart this weekend. $169 + Tax.
