looking for a 308

I am looking for something in a rifle with a little more stopping power. I know nothing about .308 battle rifles, so what are my options for whats out there?
Thanks.

Springfield M1A.

+1 on the 308 or as I like to call it the "go ahead and hide behind the cinderblock wall, it won't make any difference to me" round

M1a, you're paying for a name and a rifle that was obsolite the day it was issued, its an over priced hicap garand.......FAL is where its at, or SaFN49, FR7, FR8, CETME(HKs daddy), Saiga, Galil-Hadar II, Zavasta, Enfield 2A........with the exception of a Zavasta made weapon and the Galil, all are half the price of an M1a and will do everything it will......

Now Einheit I know you love the FAL (I think we did this on another tread didn't we? ) and while you may well like them more than the M1A and there certainly are less expensive options than the Springer, I don't think its fair to consider the M1A obsolete. Navy SEAL teams still choose modified versions of them in limited applications over other 308 rifles.

That being said I've never shot a FAL........"Honey, I need to get a new gun!"

The funny thing is that the FN FAL lost to the M1A during trials to find a replacement to the M1 Garand. I allways liked the FN FAL better, and would like to get a short barrel vertion of it one day, as I have seen them priced to high, the SOCOM and the cheaper Scout are nice, as are the accurized M1A's, but if money was not an issue, The FN FAL is my choice.

G3's are a great rifle with a little trigger work.

I think I'd look into the new AR-10 varients for my money.
The DPMS AR-10 have glowing reviews.
If I wasn't in CA I'd own one.
Here a review at Gunblast:

The only reason it lost was because of the 'not made here' syndrome....and yes the M1a is obsolite. Semi auto hunting rifles offer more for the dollar. When did it come out?? The CETME and FAL were already on the seen, the SaFN had been up chambered to 8mm in the middle east, the SKS was in service with and being replaced by the AK. 3500 FALs went into service with the Marine Corp for a short time, the M1a went to the wayside because the only country that would adopt it was Taiwan, actually we gave them everything to build M1as since it was a flop against the others and was a step backwards in a battle rifle. it made its way to Korea and the Philippenes where ArmsCorp kept it alive. China made thier versions of it till the SVD came about and made thier copy...in .308. The M1a design was 10 years too late.

In the unit I was attache dto in Yugo (Navy diver attached to the 16CE) we had a guy with a DS Arms FAL playing 'overwatch', it was his personal weapon. Springfields M1a is the only one that can be mass produced and, since it pretty much hasn't changed other than barrel length, meets the US military quals.......But I bet you that if you test all the others I mentioned -so would they.....Sorry, its just too much money for what it is. I don't blame you though, most of you think that the AR is the best thing since sliced bread......til you get ahold of an AR180b or XCR or 556-1 or FN SCaR lite or G36 (XM.................
