Underarmor helps wick away the moisture from sweat.
I think you are paying a lot for the name, if you buy off brand Polypropolene (sp?) long underwear you get the same effect for about 1/2 the price. If you are buying the old fashioned cotton waffel long underware, and doing a lot of walking while hunting the long underwear will soak up the sweat and lose it's insulating properties. So the short answer is, polypropolene long underwear, or other synthetics that have "Wicking" properties are worth it. Underarmor is a name brand that may or may not be worth the price depending upon what features you like and how they fit you. FWIW I use the off brand stuff, my daughter has to be a bit more fashionable and uses Under Armor or Addias brand. Luckily we have an outlet mall not too far away that has an Under Armor closeout store. They usually have something she wants at a substantial discount.

I have some wool long johns that were issued to me by the Army. They beat the polypros for comfort in my opinion. They also kep me nice and warm. You could probably find them at a military surplus store in your area. Some might say that wool itches, but I've never had a problem. There are many types of wool and some are soft to the point of silkiness. Plus, wool will absorb sweat and still feel dry. That's one of the properties that made wool the fabric of choice for so many armies around the world.

Personally, I feel like underarmor type garments are good. If you're sweating in the winter, you've got too many clothes on. When I'm trying to stay warm, I'll put on an off brand underarmor type garment to wick away any sweat or moisture and then put the regular insulated clothing on over it. I do multiple thin layers instead of thick clothing. If you get hot, take a layer off. Oh, on a side note, the wool itches me and the underarmor keeps it from doing that.

I wear the Black Water Cold Gear. It keeps you warm without the bulk. It is what I wear when I plan on sitting in a tree stand for 10 hours.
The gear is expensive in comparison to normal long underwear, but you can find deals on-line and quality does cost money. Here is a good source: http://thedutyrig.com/products.php?cat=51 OS

Another vote here for the underarmor type. My bother in law works in -25 degress at a distrabution center and he and he co-workers swear by the stuff. The comment about multiple thin layers is spot on, it creates small air pockets that help further insulate.

I was issued them well over 20 years ago, the reason I still have them is that they itch so damn much I can't stand to wear them unless I have something else under them.
