Columbus,OH sucks....

I was gonna move there but....ill stay in cleveland suburbs...

The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that starting Aug. 11, "assault weapons" owners will have 90 days to register their guns or risk being charged with a crime. Owners must register guns Columbus law now classifies as assault weapons, but city officials say they won’t make them trek to an office to do it.

From the story:
  1. Some city officials had proposed requiring all assaultweapons owners to register in person.

But Public Safety officials determined this week that owners of the weapons can complete a one-page form, notarize it and mail it in, said Assistant Safety Director Barb Seckler.

"It should be pretty painless," said city licensing officer Ralph Jones, who helped design the process. "That’s it, no fee."

Firearm owners have until Nov. 9 to register. If they prefer, they can register in person at 750 Piedmont Rd., where notaries are available. City officials are asking residents to come with the firearm’s make, model and serial number, but not the weapon.
Do they honestly believe people who use these firearms (which they typically don't even legally possess) to harm others and commit crimes are preparing right now to jump through these ridiculous hoops? What exactly do they think the definition of a criminal is, anyways?

The story raises an even more ridiculous notion:
  1. Although the ban is aimed at Columbus residents, anyone who owns one of these firearms and thinks they might move to Columbus should register as well, city guidelines say.

That’s because the registration is a one-time event. If someone moves to the city after Nov. 9 and owns one of these weapons, it will be illegal for them to keep the weapon in their home unless it’s registered.
Brent Greer, secretary of the People’s Rights Organization, told the Dispatch that making the process easier shouldn’t put gun owners at ease.

"Many who register don’t understand they are giving up their rights because they can’t give it or sell it to someone else," Greer said. "And criminals, the very people this ordinance was supposedly aimed at, won’t register their gun."

Furthermore, the story notes, the onus is on the resident to know whether the gun meets the city’s definition of an assault weapon. Not that a criminal will care either way...

The new ordinance defines "assault weapons" loosely, using largely cosmetic features such as extra pistol grips, collapsible stocks, and muzzle brakes as determining criteria.
Any pistol or rifle that accepts a detachable magazine and has just one of the cosmetic features would be considered an "assault weapon." A shotgun with two of the banned features would fall under the scope of the new law.
The ban will go into effect on August 11 of this year, giving owners of these guns less than thirty days to sell or dispose of them. Owners would then have until October 9th to register the guns with the Columbus Department of Public Safety. Failure to do so would result in a first-degree misdemeanor charge.
A second conviction for possessing one of the banned guns would carry a mandatory 30-day jail sentence. A third conviction would result in a mandatory 90-day sentence.
Proponents of the law called the banned guns "weapons of mass destruction."
Karl Spaulding, one of three people who had three minutes apiece to object to the legislation before the council voted, challenged Councilman Michal C. Mentel

Hmmmm, I thought Dayton was bad... I dont even think its legal to own an SKS or AR-15 in dayton, registered or not (carry guns to car in cases).

Here in Dayton, we have to register ourselves as gun owners. The odd part about that though, only one registrant is needed per household. I even have to register as a gun owner if I have a CCW, now go figure THAT one out!

Us folks down here in Texas just scratch our heads at the silly gun laws you have to put up with in some places.

None of that will stem the violence and its merely symbolism over substance when you get down to it.

I did not know that Ohio was so "blue"...I knew about IL, but Ohio? Jeez!

Awful....I hope you all write your reps and fight that nonsense.

All that's meant to do is punish law abiding citizens. Criminals don't give a crap about those laws.

More and more hoops and ways to track the citizens is all it is.

Bunin,

To Ohio's defense. It is not a bad state to be a gun owner. It is just the big cities that suck. They have the most crime and problems, so they use it as their solution. After New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg gets done with his alliance of 100 mayors that are going to crack down on guns at the city level, it won't matter what state you live in. He is starting with Pennsylvania because it borders his state.
