Help with High Power Rifle Match
There is going to be a high power competition at the end of the month and I've been looking for information, tips, any help on competing at this. I’ve had some help from a friend who has experience with high power rifle matches, but I’d also like to read up on some more info. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If you aren't reloading, go .308.
Highest availability and best prices on match grade ammo. Most trophy grabbers in long range comps reload. Lots use exotic calibers like the 338 lapua ($). I compete in long(ish) range with a $300 setup and do fairly, but most of the other shooters look at my setup and laugh until they see my groups. My entire .308 setup costs less than half of most of the scopes in competition. The rig: H&R .308 Survivor, Choate Stock, Tasco Varmint Scope. There's lots of info around the net. What kind of comp? What range? |

I had to look it up. The flyer says "Service Rifle" a guy that was at the last one said it was mostly ARs with one or two M14s and M1s, open sights only. Range is 100yds with simulated targets up to 600yds.
I'm going to use my AR just ordered a spotting scope too.

Generally service rifle competitions involve regular the AR-15 equivalent of the M-16A2. The rifle will usually be a national match of some sort and will have a stainless heavy barrel and a 2 stage competition trigger. I know Rock River and Bushmaster sells models exactly designed for that sole purpose, with a national match rear A2 sight.

What gun are you using I have competed in both Service rifle with an AR-15 and Match rifle with a super custom AR-15 Match rifle. I have used the 80 grain bullets and I have tried many different configurations of ammo. I settled on the Hornady 75 grain bullet loaded to magazine length as an all around cartridge. This was because we rarely shot more than 200 yards reduced course matches. It would also help to know if you are shooting a reduced course. I have shot several of these but I have only been able to shoot 1 600 yard match. I eventually settled on Black Hills 73 grain match ammo as my 200/300yard load, and the 75 grain bullet hand loaded for the 600 yard mark, but I never shot that match again so I just never loaded that again. I have loaded the 75 grain bullet only for the last 2 years and have loved it.

Shooting AR 16" barrel. I hadn't given much thought to bullet weight other than using standard 55gr I guess heavier would help with windage. Again this will be my first attempt at this kind of competition. We will be shooting 100yrd reduced course. The targets are simulated 200, 300 ,600 yrd.
From what I've been told most competitors used ARs 20" barrels some 16" a couple M14 and M1. Thanks for the link.
