9 or .40 M&P?
I love my XD's but picking up an M&P tomorrow. Actually I got the M&P .40 two days ago but there was a manufacturing error (long story) so I"m going back to get a replacement from the dealer. He's got both the 9mm and .40. Debating on which I should get?? 9mm for cheaper shooting or .40 for more of a defensive round? Thoughts?

.40 is my choice...
9mm is cheaper, all depends on what you plan on doing with this new gun. Plinking vs. CCW/protection...

It would depend on a couple things. First, what caliber is you XD and which pistol will be your carry weapon. If this is only a range weapon there is no reason to buy the .40. Personally, I think it is far more important to be a perfect shot than to have a larger caliber. The only way I can become proficient with a pistol is to fire thousands of rounds, which is very expensive with a .40. Therefore, I have always been a fan of the 9mm. Not just for cost of ammo, but because I feel I can place my shots better and faster.

Ammo Price: Great, nice and cheap both FMJ and defensive rounds Shooting Fun: 9mm is a fun fairly easy round to shoot, it's a real nice round to play around with. Practice Shooting: 9mm is great to practice with, the recoil isn't so large that you will get bad habbits over compensting for the recoil Defense: 9mm is OK for defense, consider that a lot of LE use 9mm it's a pretty safe bet. Not the greatest, but not the worst... .40s&w Ammo Price: .40SW rounds are a few dollars more per box, over the long haul (10,000 rounds) it can be a HUGE difference. Shooting Fun: .40S&W is a excellient round to shoot for fun. It's large enough to make the big "booms" and still be manageable. Shooting Practice: .40S&W can be a hard round to practice with unless you have some experence behind you. The novice can find himself getting bad habbits from the larger recoil of the gun. Defense: .40S&W is an excellient round for defense, it's still debatable between 45 and 40 which is the "better" defense round, but .40 does hold it's ground. Here's my $0.02...

I have both the XD 45 service and 9mmSC. I usually carry the 9SC due to the shorter grip. The 45 service is comfortable but with my 3:30 - 4:00 carry, the butt sticks out a lot.
The M&P size-wise is between the 9SC and the 45 service. Actually the M&P is not much bigger than the 9SC with the exception of one more inch of barrell. I may or may not carry the M&P? I believe that bigger (rounds) is ultimately better but the 9mm round is a formidable round given the right ammo. Decisions, decisions????

I ended up going with the 9mm. I think I'll skip the .40 all together and once I get proficient with the 9, I'll up to the .45 which is my favorite caliber. Unfortunately I can't afford to shoot it as much right now. The 9mm with good ammo makes a very adequete defense round plus I can get my technique and comfort with it and then go to the .45. Maybe by then Springfield will have a nice compact .45.

A kill shot is a kill shot, whether the hole is 9mm in diameter or .40 of an inch. You guys acting like it's a life and death difference are full of it. Learn to shoot what you've got well. Learn where the vital organs are in the human body. Practice and gain confidence. My 9mm will kill a man just as well as my .45. It's just more fun with the .45ACP.
