Recomend a 22 rifle...

Hi guys I want to build a nice 22 rifles. I have been browsing the local gun store for a used 10/22 but I haven’t found one that suit my price. I want to spend around 150, and want to build it up later. Nothing crazy like buying a Pacer and dropping a V10 on it. Something that I can do at home like the 10/22, maybe get a match barrel, scope, new stock etc. etc. What other 22 rifle are out there that you would recommend?

If you want a 10/22, and you're going to build it up later, you can always get one from Wal-Mart, new, for that price. The 10/22s are great shooters. I have the carbine, which I bought with the intentions of modding, but have yet to make a single change.

A 10/22 shouldn't be hard to find at a decent price. If you're looking to mod a 22 rifle, I'd recommend the 10/22. You get so many options for modifying it & there are many sources to choose from. I'd be concerned with another rifle that you simply won't have the options available, even though you have the gun. Just look at various websites for 22 target barrels, stocks, triggers, etc. It is overwhelmingly geared toward the Ruger 10/22.

By the way, yes I own one and am extremely pleased with the gun. I've had it since I was a kid and I'm over 40 now and it still shoots great & reliably. My daughters are now learning on it.

How big are you? I'm 6'4" with long arms and as much as I love ruger 10-22's, they are just to short for me to shoot accurately. My most accurate .22 auto is a Marlin. However, if you want a project gun you really have no choice but to get the 10-22.

Id NEVER buy anything (weapons-wise) from Wal-Mart... did some reading on them a few years ago... they can sell firearms cheaper due to them being made of cheaper grade metals... ask around, I've talked to a lot of people that bought from them and they broke in no time. Not worth it if you are going to do any real shooting from it.

I undertsnad where your comming from, I hear the story of snapper lawn mower did not want to sell cheap version of there product which will eventually degrade the reputation of the company.

I'm thinking of a nice used 10/22, I'm talked to one gun store owner he hinted that if I come with cash it might be cheaper!

-----------------

I'm 6'1" 240lb, I have a springfield/stevens 22 single bolt that is small to me, but I love it! Nothing like having only one round, you really make every shot count! I've been getting very good groupings near 1.5 inches @ 25 yards. Sadly if I want to shoot further I need a better sight, the iron sight on mine is really ment for a child. my big azz face gets in the way!

Hate to tell you this, but a Ruger 10/22 from Wal-Mart is the exact same gun as you get from a dealer or SPortsmas Wharehouse or Gander Mountain or anywhere else. Same model numbers and part numbers. Same goes fro there Remingtons, Marlins and so on!!
The reason they can sell a 10-22 15 dollars cheaper is that the sell 10,000 of them instead of 10 per year.
