Polytech M14...

I've got a chance to pick up a preban Polytech M14 with some extras for $700.00.

From what I've read, it seems the Polytech recievers were better than the Norinco recievers as far as M14's from the PRC are concerned.

Thoughts?

It has a poly stock, B Square scope mount, USGI flash hider, bayonette lug and a few mags....

Not bad for a Poly. good guns, just search for spare parts and buy them if you plan keeping the rifle.....they get extremely hard to find from time to time. As far as buying American, they are overpriced for what it is....IMHO....

Polytechs have forged receivers. Most of them have out of spec
or soft bolts.Don`t worry the guys at fulton armory can fix it.

$700 is abit steep.

In addition to the soft bolts (prone to breaking) that Dwweeb_5150 mentioned, I recall reading that there are headspacing issues with these which makes shooting commercial .308 ammo problematic. It's worth looking into, as $700 isn't pocket change in most people's book. Maybe a bolt replacement would resolve the headspacing issue?

That Chinese rifle seems to get grouped into the Hi-Point category. That being, they are cheap and they work.

My 2 cents is that you get a CMP Garand and big case of ammo for the same price. Yeah, it's a bit old school, but there is some major pride and history involved.

I'd suggest the Springfield Armory M1A or Socom, but they are more than twice the price of your $700 bankroll

I like to shoot Wolf ammo out of my Hi-Point pistol and rifle.

Have you seen what the CMP is selling these days? Rack grade is about all you can get and imports at that. Better off looking on GB or GA for a better quality one. i just picked up a Korean war Garand for about $900 on GB. Nice bore, bolt, etc. Before that I got one from a guy on AR-15.com for $700 shipped. 4/'44 receiver with a new '47 bbl. (The bbl gauged 0 on the muzzle and 1.5 on the TE). Nice wood, etc. so they are out there.

I have to agree on the out of spec issues with the PolyTechs. USGI spec parts will NOT fit more often than not. The $$ you will have to spend on parts more than justifies the $1200 or so you can get a decent used M1A for.

I own a SOCOM 16 and love it. The muzzle break takes a little to get used to. (And your range neighbors will not like it so much either).

Hmm, some good replies here. I'll give it some thinkin'. If it's only a couple hundred to that it lapped for a USGI bolt though, it may still be a deal.
