Bad Cheaper Than Dirt Experience - not the norm (56k warning - pics)

First let me say that I've ordered from CTD before and they've done a good job. But this time, I was shocked and disappointed.

I ordered a BSA scope with an illuminate reticle. Got the box today and here's what I got -

This picture shows the scope right out of the box. Notice the worn finish where the scope rings would be attached.

Look at the end caps - they looked like they were chewed on.

Now granted this is next pic is crappy, but it is the crosshairs with the illumination on max

For a fair comparison, here's another scope with same power setting and same illuminate reticle setting

So I call CTD. They go through the whole return form discussion, which is fine. I then ask if they are going to give me a full refund, including the cost to return the shipment. I get "probably not" on the reimbursement for return shipment. What a crock! I'll give them a chance to reconsider when they get the package. If not, I am going to chew someone's butt!

I was pretty angry when BSA made me send them a $10 check for return shipping when they replaced my red dot scope for warranty replacement. Granted, it wasn't near as bad as what's going on with yours, but it's still absurd to make someone pay anything for your mistake.

I agree. When a product is defective, the company with the defective product should pay all shipping costs.

In my case, I couldn't believe that they were not equally disappointed in their performance. You get this little piece of paper claiming that the product was inspected...There's no way you could look at this scope and not immediately conclude that it was a used scope. The scratched ring marks, the abused end caps, and the poor illumination (probably due to a low battery). What was inspected??? Shouldn't they be completely embarrassed?

haha well yeah... they should be.

And I just thought of this... not only did they charge me for shipping, but shipping this item for me cost $4, so they are OVERCHARGING me on that! What a load o' BS.

But hey, maybe that's just a precaution in case they decide it's not a defect covered by their warranty. I dunno. We shall see, I guess.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm calling them back and am going to start the chewing now.

Unfortunately, having to pay your own return shipping, even on defective products, is more the norm for internet shopping than the exception. There are a few outfits that will reimburse postage, but not many that I know of.

I had the same thing happened to me with a scope from "Sportsman's Guide", when I called to complain they toll me to send it back and they would send a new one when they received the crap they send, I realy lost it and demanded they send one that day, that I would send back their scope when I had time...I ended up talking to a supervisor that made sure they send a new scope that day, I send theirs back when I got the new one in.

Thanks again PackerfanXD! I called CTD and initially got the same response - basically fill out the form, pay shipping, and we'll review the return to determine if you get reimbursed.

I told that they should embarrassed with this order. "You sold me an obviously used and damaged product, as a new product." I followed up by saying "There's no way in hell I'm going to pay shipping."

The woman then changed her tone from uncompromising rigid to "let me get with my manager and let's see what we can do." In the end, they gave me FedEx number to use & take it to Kinkos where the return shipment will be prepaid by CTD.
