.30-06. A century of excellence speaks for itself. And yes, it is my favorite rifle round.

No, the 7.62x54r is a century of excellence, its still used the world over in the military and sporting arms....the US just don't get it. The '06 died during Korea, the .270 eats it up. And the .308 is still going.........(just ruffling feathers)

A guy from work I go shoot with just bought one of those Savage 110 rifles... his is a 30-06. Not bad for the price... My preference is a .308... but thats just me, no reason really... If I was buying the Savage it would be the .308

I did. It's the gun real men shoot. When I'm at the range I'm one bad ass SOB! Or at least I feel like one. It's one fun shooter.

If you plan on never going any bigger than deer, a 25-06 is a great choice. It can really reach out and touch them. Plus loaded with 75 gr V-max makes prairie dogs turn into red vapor!

30-06 and .270s are tried and true, no doubt, but more gun than you might need if your hunting in mixed cover with shots of 125yds or less. You can get a cheapie Marlin Model 336 at Wally World. When I say "cheapie", I don't mean they're made cheap. Either an "AS" or "W" model will not cost you much bucks and a Marlin 30-30 in any model is a accurate workhorse.

Load it up with the new Hornady LeverEvolution rounds. With that round you'll get plenty of distance and punch out to even 200yds. A lever action will give you a faster 2nd shot than a bolt action will, should you need it. 30-30 levers have probably taken more whitetails than any other rifle. JMHO

If your dead set on a bolt then go for the 30-06. Good punch, good distance, good selection and price of ammo.

In the end, yes I would like to.

As for now....... I thank you all for the good info. I see there is some personal preferance as always, I do think it all sounds good.

I will be in search mode, I will check WW for lever actions and some local pawn shops.

We just bought a house, so savings is gone and things are a bit tight at the moment. So that means the wife is not really happy about a sum of money going to ANOTHER gun, even though it will put meat on the table. She said she would rather take the money and buy that much beef....... I said I could shoot our cow.......
