Why? .17 Mach 2 Snubnose Revolver
What is this for?
http://www.taurususa.com/products/pr...egory=Revolver in a self defense situation, it would be very poor I would guess. The bad guy would probably go down in a few minutes, and maybe even die in the hospital, but it's a poor defense round I think. Might be good for shooting small game when backpacking/camping.

i would tend to agree, hobo circus. I know nothing about the ballistics of this round... somebody told me a story about shooting a deer with and it gothis round and it goiing down with one shot (head shot... guy's an idiot, not sure why he was shooting deer in the head... off topic) did have a couple thoughts/questions
1) is it 8 or 9 round capacity? (top of the page says 9, later says 8... just a question) 2) for REALLY small people or someone with arthritis/other disability, the kick on this thing has to be minimal. also, higher capacity than a lot of small autos with ease/reliability of a revolver. that's the case i'd make as a salesman. now, you won't see me putting down my XD for it |

I dunno about the true capacity of it... website looks kinda screwy. At the bottom of the description it says "perfect for v" like it got cut off. Silly brasilians... I'd say this would be a good CCW for the recoil sensitive, but not my first choice for a defensive weapon. It's better than nothing, but not really something I'd want to carry. Other than that, I could see it as a fun gun to have as a complement to your .17HM2 rifle to screw around with at the range.

I wouldn't really want one of these to protect myself with. However, the one situation I can see it being effective is this. Bad guy with no gun or knife, not knowing the caliber of the gun might be likely to flee once you pull it. And really any gun being pulled, and myself personally, I am going to be heading for the hills. I know not everyone is going to do that. But it really would be a lot better than having nothing at all. I think this bullet has a little more thump than a .22 at least. i know it's a faster round.

The extreme small diameter of the 17cal bullets and the sharp point many of them come to actually do OK penetrating soft body armor. Not that that is much of a reason to carry a snub nose 17HM2 but who knows why they make it.

My opinion on the matter is that Taurus makes everything you could ever possibly want in a revolver. If someone gave me one of those, I wouldn't turn it down. Would you? All in all, it would be fun...but it's a toy really. I guess for pest control it could be ok, if you can hit pests with a snubbie. People ask why. I ask, why not?

would make a good trapline pistol if you where a trapper i guess.
other than that i couldnt see the purpose of carring such a small caliber from a defense stand point. but hey i guess a 17HM2 snuby is better than nothing at all. anybody wonder why they didnt make it a HMR? or is it an HMR? the headline says 17HM2 but the specs page says HMR. ?????? oh i think the last sentence should read "perfect for varmits" rats maybe? or squirrels on your back porch? lol

Shooting @ >2000fps, it still is a flatter shooting round than .22LR and .22mag. so I'd say it's a pretty feisty little firearm. You could ask the same question why people make .22LR snub revolvers? Why does North American Arms make those tiny itty bitty 31/32" inch barrelled 5 shot .22 short revolvers? Who knows. Edit: My post is misleading since I forgot to put in energy stats... the .22Mag, while comparable to the .17HM2 in trajectory, has much much more energy (It's like 115ft.lb. v. 60 something at 150 yards (rifle ranges, I know), I don't remember).
