Magazine capacity...whats it 'really' hold?

Hello all, I am new to the group and new to XDs. I posted a few weeks ago when I got my XD40 and couldnt load 12 rounds in the magazine without a loading tool. I got curious about how many rounds other guns magazines would really hold so I went to a friend who is a handgun collector and we loaded up a bunch of new -magazines for some of his guns. Results as follows.
Glock 19 15 round mag - 14 rounds loaded with a struggle, an old police mag did hold 15, couldnt load 15 rounds in the new dropfree's.
Glock 23 13 rounds - 12 with a lot of effort, a new oldstyle nondrop mag held 13 rounds without any problem.
Glock 22 15 round - 14 with a lot of effort, 15 with extreme effort but the magazine would not seat in the gun without heavy force and the slide was extremely difficult to retract.
Walther P99 12 round- 11 rounds and that was it, no way to load 12.
Glock 30 10 round - 9 rounds, 10 with heavy effort and you couldnt seat the magazine in the gun.
S&W 5906 15 round - 15 rounds, easy to load, mags seated fine.
Browning Hipower - 13 rounds- 13 rounds no problem
Your results may vary of course, these were all done with new magazines, so the older mags might breakin and load easier. Still the glocks were all very to difficult to load to stated capacity, "perfection" my eye!

I have a G27 which is chambered in .40 S&W. It's the baby version and is supposed to hold 9... which it has since day one. It was a little tight the first 10 times or so that I loaded the mag but that is no longer an issue. Not one FTF or FTE ever in this weapon and I have fired well over 1,000 rounds through it.

That being said... I have no real experience with any of the glock models or other models you mention. Interesting...

My Glock mags tend to be tight on those last few rounds when new. They improve with use. Try keeping them fully loaded between uses.

Rico, I passed that on to my friend, he said he's going to load all the mags to capacity and just leave them loaded. The majority of his mags were LEO onlys that he bought after the ban sunsetted, may be that makes a difference.

I've never heard of a mag not holding what it's supposed to. Sometimes it's tough to get the full amt. in when the mags are new, but still.. never ever ever heard of the full capacity not fitting. Get a mag loader if you can't push the last few rounds in and see what happens.

I was able to load 18 rounds in my 16 round magazine for my XD-9 (I don't do it anymore, just load 16). In my AR-15 I loaded 32 rounds on a 30 round magazine with a stainless steel spring.

Anyway, when my XD-9 mag was brand new, I literally could only get 15 in it. Well after lots of use it easily holds an extra 2, though theres so much force that the slide must be locked back in order to even stick the magazine in when 18 are in the magazine. With 17 I can insert it in fine.

If you go to far with the number of rounds you cram into your mad, you wil be unable to load the the thing!. The recomended amount is just that. don't try to cram to many in it. If you think it is OK then try to do a tac load or a reload with retention and you will see real quick why that one extra round you can load will get you into trouble.

Good point. You should always train with your equipment and use it the exact same way you would as in a defense scenario. I technically can hold 17 + 1 and stick in the magazine, but it puts considerable force on the ejector, so its NOT recommended as it creates extra wear and tear on your gun. I run 16 with + 1 in the pipe.

Your results may vary of course
The following is my personal experience, with "1" being most difficult to load to capacity without assistance of a reloading tool:

1. Browning 10-round Hi-Power mag
2. SA XD45ACP 13-round mag
3. Unknown brand 10-round Ruger MkII mag
4. SA XD40 12-round mag
5. Browning 13-round Hi-Power mag
6. Ruger 10-round MkII mag
7. SA XD9 16-round mag

No problem: SiG and Novak 8-round P220 mags, MecGar 13 and 15 round Browning Hi-Power mags, SA 15-round XD9 mags, any of my 7, 8, and 10-round 1911 mags (Colt, SA, Wilson, CMC). One of life's mysteries is why there are 8 sight-holes in the 7-round mags that came with my Black Stainless.
